As for fiscal vs social conservatives, I wouldn’t consider a person conservative unless he was both. I don’t think you can pick and choose from a laundry list of positions and have a conservative position on some and a liberal position on others and still call yourself a conservative. One who believes in big government spending, high taxes, entitlements and government handouts is a liberal plain and simple even if he doesn’t believe in abortion or gay rights, etc.

Sounds like a COMPASSIONATE Conservative to me. Who do we all know who adamantly claims a belief in 'compassionate conservatism' -- that old 'reach-across-the-aisle-even-if-it's-Ted-Kennedy's-big-fat-socialist-hand' method of governing? (except for the high taxes part, that is)

I’ve never like the idea of compassionate conservatism and have always said so. I prefer plain old fashioned type of conservatism without the excuses for liberalism.
