Had to be it: "Owls in the Family," by Farley Mowat. This is not about Archie and Meathead. It is about Wol the Owl and Weeps the other owl. You can remember the name Wol the Owl because the letters in 0-w-l can spell W-o-l. Here is a very fine review:

Wol and Weeps, the two feathered protagonists, are two of the most lovable pets you'll ever read about in print.
