Jack Welch once talked about legacy - legacy as an employee in a leadership position. If you survive 5 years in the same position you become nothing more than a legacy. Your ideas become stagnant, your value becomes linear. It becomes home, and you walk past the four foot weed every single day without seeing it. Each successful corporate offspring he had adopted the same philosophy and so many of these CFO’s, COO’s, Presidents, and CEO’s sought other pastures with his philosophies to great rewards. He was right, and GE adopted a program to weed out the legacies. It works, I have lived by it. Sounds rude, sounds crude, but to further an objective and goal you must do that as leader from time to time. Let new leaders rise from the shadows.
