When I relocated to a new neighborhood and a new school when I was 13, I was harrassed while riding the school bus home. The first thing I did was to level the bully with a right hook to the jaw the second we stepped off. While he layed flat on his back out cold for the rest of the riders to see. Needless to say, we soon became best friends after that little attitude adjusment. When word spread throughout the school the next day, no one dared even think about bustin’ my balls.

You'd be expelled for that today. There's zero tolerance for violence, but apparently no zero tolerance for the bullying and teasing that leads up to it.

When I was a freshman in HS I played varsity football. One of the seniors was a bully and picked on me for a couple of days in the locker room. The third day I went after him with everything I had. He beat me badly but I kept getting up and going back after him. I let him know I wasn't going to take his bullying. He finally pushed me back and said 'Let's stop.' He left me alone after that. We were never friends but he never bothered me again.

Bullies tend to go for weak targets; When one fights back, they look for easier targets. One may get bloody standing up to one, but the bully typically doesn't want to be bothered when there are easier targets.
