Accused Former Duke Lax Player Lands Morgan Stanley Job
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 18, 2007 | Dana Cimilluca

Posted on 04/18/2007 11:03:11 AM PDT by abb

A few months ago, former Duke University lacrosse captain David Evans was facing rape charges. He was shunned and taunted for his alleged role in a crime that North Carolina’s attorney general has declared never happened.

Now Evans has gained the trust of Morgan Stanley Chief Executive John Mack, a Duke alum and trustee (class of ‘68) who went to bat for Evans after serious questions were raised about the case against he and his two former teammates.

Evans now has landed one of the most prestigious jobs on Wall Street, Deal Journal has learned. Morgan Stanley has hired Evans, who graduated in May 2006, as part of its analyst program. Landing a plum job — which is paying well into the six-figure range these days — has to be a satisfying end to a bitter sequence of events for Evans since the rape allegations surfaced in March 2006.

The 24-year-old Maryland native had a job lined up at J.P. Morgan Chase’s investment bank that was rescinded in the wake of his May 2006 indictment, with the bank telling him it probably wasn’t the best time to be starting a new job. After he was cleared recently, J.P. Morgan came back to Evans and made a new offer, which he declined.

J.P. Morgan declined to comment. We’re trying to get comment from Evans and will post again if and when that happens.

But don’t expect his life to resume the course it was on any time soon. When asked by Leslie Stahl in a recent “60 Minutes” show whether the dismissal of the charges means the ordeal is over for him, Evans said, “I don’t think it really will ever be over … when I die, they’ll say ‘one of the three Duke lacrosse rape suspects died today...

I totally agree with your assessment of this whole debacle. They were thoughtless and reckless immature “kids”, not considering the possible consequences of their “party plans.” They were unjustly accused, but set themselves up for it by going waaaay overboard when they hired the strippers in the first place; e.g., when you lie down with dogs.........

Oh, boy! You’re a regular riot!

Let the first amongst you who has not sinned cast the first stone.

Time and the ability to go forward with one’s life will heal all wounds. It may take years, but a healthy attitude and the ability to live a good life with loving family and friends around you will allow you to look back and say, “I recognize what happened, but I don’t have to realize it daily anymore.” It’s true. The best revenge is living well. The best legacy is allowing others to see what someone tried to deny you.

Unlike others in the news today, David Evans has the chance to really produce children who will carry on the name with the honor that he has defined. He will also personify grace under fire.

I can’t come close to agreeing with you. If they had been kicked off the team, suspended from school, had graduation delayed, or even had a job offer pulled due to their admitted actions — most or all of which are overreactions, then I’d agree. These guys were falsely charged with a serious felony!

You can’t reasonably or even remotely anticipate that from over-party, fratboy behavior.

“Dear David......Congrats and NEVER be at any party that is low enough to hire a stripper!”

It’s funny, isn’t it? It has been a right of passage for guys to have a stripper at their bachelor parties, or at a guy’s night out. I guaran-damn-tee you that the mention of the word “stripper” in any way shape or form will cause his skin to crawl and his heart to skip a beat. He may start to shake and ask someone he trusts, “Will there ever be a time in my life when I can hear that word and not get sick?” All three young men have had a very, very close call with a run-away mob. In time, they will be able to hear the word and not freeze, but it will take a long, long time.

Yes, David was right, and he has to go on in spite of it. Like they say when you’re way up high. Don’t look down. Just keep going and look up. You’ll get there kid, you’ll get there.

>>A tailor-made situation for a rape charge.<<

This is just stupid! There is no such thing as a tailor-made situation for a rape charge — at least one that is seriously investigated — sort of actions that constitute or come close to some form of sexual assault.

It is not reasonable to live your life with the expectation or fear the possibility that someone is going to falsely charge you with a felony, regardless of your legal actions. That’s nonsense. That’s like saying an attractive woman wearing a skimpy bikini to the beach is inviting someone assault her and remove her clothes and do whatever to her.

Surely you don’t hold that position.

Glad to hear that there is more agreement on this. But you might want to duck!

I am heartily sorry if my opionion has offended anyone. I did not intend to. It is my opinion and there is no requirement that anyone else share it.

I have a 20 yo son at college and maybe I’m a bit sensitive to the condition of our world and our culture. I have so much respect for my son and the young men attending school with him. I can guarantee non of them are drinking in their rooms or hiring strippers on break.

Some might be headed for Morgan Stanley eventually and I’m sure many will be successful, as it is regarded in our society. But before that, many of them will be going to Iraq and Afghanistan and who knows where else.

Some of them won’t be coming back to good jobs.

Some won’t be coming back at all.

Maybe I’ve just lost perspective.

I apologize.

Does He or doesn't He? Only He knows for sure.

"I apologize."

Now STOP that - LOL! You're a FReeper as well as a mom. A mom defends her family, and a FReeper defends a reasonable position, keeps on punching, and doesn't back down! And if someone doesn't like it, punch 'em again!

That’s true, I’m sure, but I didn’t even mean to get into all of this. My son had been home (too rare), we had heard that the cadet that want missing was a suicide, then Tech (I’m from VA). This thread popped up and I posted my opinion. I tend to be more of a lurker—I enjoyed other people’s posts.

My perspective was out of whack, thinking about dead kids and war. I know the Duke kids have family too. These folks here must be friends and family, so God bless ‘em. They’re hurting too.

I didn’t expect the vitriol and it’s really just not that important to me.

I like a little vitriol occasionally. Mix it with some Jack Daniels and light up an Avanti cigar. Just the thing to make one appreciate a still beating heart.

when you lie down with dogs.........

Evans apologized for the party over a year ago, and on several other occasions:

durhamwonderland.blogspot.com/2007/03/men-of-cloth.html

The captains apologized for holding the party in meetings with the Athletic Department (March 24), President Brodhead (March 28), and a public statement (March 28). Dave Evans apologized for it in his 60 Minutes interview.

twigs: Will you follow Dave's example, and publicly apologize for the sins you referred to in an earlier post?

Max: Got anything you'd like to confess while you're here? :)

You get that from the Washington Post?

The whole, sole and only reason Levicy is being interviewed on January 10 was not for purposes of continuing the case (by this time, according to his account, Mikey had decided he needed to get out). Rather, the only reason that she is being interviewed is that Mikey is attempting to put together a defense for his “condom” comments in the Bar’s complaint, and wants to bolster it with Levicy. She obliges without apparently reviewing her own documents carefully. When she does, and when she realizes that the DNA came from epitheleal as well as sperm fractions, she calls and includes “it did not happen” as a valid explanation.

Finally, one VERY important point in all of this is that all of this evidence that was subjected to DNA testing was collected by women. Meehan was running Y-STR tests, which will pick up male DNA. Thus, there was ZERO chance of contamination during the collection process since all of the people who collected the evidence were women.

Gasp. My eyes are huge, and I just had to close my jaw. Consciously.

If you can, help me here, when you have a moment? My memory is fuzzy this morning.

Is Colin Finnerty blondhaired/blue-eyed?

Reid and Dave are brunettes, I recall affirmatively.
