and then they win lawsuits of many dollars to continue to fund their [expletives deleted] activities.

Well, I'm fully aware of their Modus Operandi. But my point here is that Southwest Virginia is much different than in other parts of the country, and vigilante "justice" against idiot outsiders like Phelps can generally be the rule rather than the exception, based on the region's 19th century style mountain culture. Lawsuits, or threats thereof, will have zero affect on people who are either already poor, or have zero respect for civil and/or criminal law. If Phelps shows up at a funeral there spouting his BS, then he (or his minions, as the case may be), will surely run into trouble from the outraged families. The law, in this circumstance, would most likely look the other way.

Believe me, I know what I'm talking about...

He'd have to file any lawsuits in Virginia. I can't imagine any jury pool would have any sympathy towards Phelps.

Take a powder, Virginia. I’ve spent my share of time in and around the old I81 corridor, have family in the area, so I’m not questioning you at all.

I’m just suggesting that anyone following through with the beatdown (while I will give them a major thumbs up) is just assisting with the funding of their future activities.
