If an American news organization like Fox identifies someone as asian, it usually means Asian Pacific, NOT middle eastern. When BBC reports asian it’s usually Pakistani.

The report was based on what the witness said. VT has students and faculty from all over. If the witness was (for example) British, "Asian" can mean anything from Chinese to Saudi. I doubt the reporter would have the presence of mind (or linguistic knowledge) to pursue the matter, especially when the witness is sitting there bleeding.
I'll be a while before we know what went down.
