Latest State Police report at 1:15pm stated perp was an Asian male and he shot himself. FBI and ATF are on scene. They believe the perp MAY have had military or law enforcement training and cannot rule out terrorism (they actually said a link to Al Qaeda) since this was a massive school shooting. They noted in the report that schools are often the target of terrorism over seas.

No, the report didn’t say anything about a motive. I am hoping another State Police report will come out soon. My husband will be at work until around 6:30pm, so hopefully he’ll get some more info over the LEO wires.

I was just talking about this with a friend. I'm in grad school in DC, and look at the crime rate here. Campus is pretty lax with security, and this could happen very easily.

Having graduated from a large state-school (30,000 undergrads) and now attending a small liberal arts school (about 8,000 total students), security on most college campuses is really nonexistent. It does make you wonder if concealed weapons should be allowed. DC's gun law is questionable, but even in Knoxville, guns were banned from campus, and UT is a major ag school. I think the vast majority of colleges ban weapons on school property.

2nd, this kind of no-weapons zone is standard procedure at many government establishments AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN (no “Founders would’ve disapproved” - they wouldn’t; they had sense and respect). Read the post to which I replied for starters.

You can’t be serious that with all the rioting over stupid basketball games (lose OR win!) that have commonly occurred within the last 5 years on/near college campi that these “students” can be trusted. Some are innocent but far too many are not to ignore.

I heard on the radio news that a bunch of them were lined up and shot execution style...on Fox Radio News. I don’t know if that is true...just thought I would add that.

Friend of mine says that an active at his fraternity reports that the shooter first had an argument with his girlfriend - it escalated, and he shot her. Then, about an hour later, he went over to Norris Hall and started popping people. All hearsay, of course.

What makes you think those unstable classmates aren’t carrying illegally. You do have to go through a process to get a permit to carry. It’s not like you can just go down to WalMart and buy a CCW when you’re picking up your hunting license. There is a reason why I can’t remember an instance when someone that has a carry permit being involved in this type of tragedy. And it’s not old age.

If all students fit your profile, there would be no question that having them carry guns to class would be a good thing. Unfortunately, a lot of college students do not have the maturity to do that. I personally think it’s a very difficult question, but not because of people like you.
