What supposedly happened is that the red pickup truck entered from the right shoulder, cutting off a white Dodge Ram. The Dodge Ram then swerved into the left lane, and Corzine’s Chevy Suburban swerved off the road to avoid the Dodge Ram (which may or may not have been hit by Corzine’s Suburban, depending on which news account you believe). The white Dodge Ram driver stopped, but the red truck didn’t. Police are looking for the driver of the red truck, who might not even know that they are looking for him or her.

I know the circumstances of "who did what", but again in NJ accidents from the rear are almost always faulted to the driver following. In this case the rationale would be that either the trooper was 1.) going too fast 2.) following to closely 3.)not paying attention, or some combination of the three.

A couple of years ago I saw a driver get rear ended after he locked up all four wheels for a cat crossing the road. The driver who hit him, got the ticket, and the hospital stay. The cat walked away unharmed.
