I’ve read the new book “Varina Davis.” It’s through, but it does appear the author has an agenda. The most definitive biography about Mrs. Davis, as well as Mrs. Lincoln, is “Crowns of Thorns and Roses.”
Varina Davis became my hero forever after reading it. And much of the vilification of Mary Todd Lincoln was laid to rest.
Through = thorough

"Crowns of Thorns and Glory" was a split view of the two ladies and IMHO Van der Heuvel spent far more time on Mrs. Lincoln than Mrs. Davis, possibly because she was the better documented of the two. In any event, I believe Varina Davis has deserved a biography of her own for some time, and I think it's hard to say Ms. Cashin has an agenda with so little other work on Mrs. Davis to compare her two. Her husband's biographers have all noted the long separations between the two without delving into the why. Ms. Cashin attempts to do that.
