CBS Will 'Do the Right Thing'
Newsweek ^ | 4/11/07 | Johnnie L. Roberts

April 11, 2007 - Media mogul Sumner Redstone says he's looking to his chief lieutenant, CBS Corp. chief executive Leslie Moonves, to “do the right thing” when it comes to deciding whether to fire Don Imus, the CBS Radio star shock jock now being whipsawed in a storm of racial controversy.

“He'll make the ultimate decision. But I'm confident he will deal with it in an appropriate manner,” Redstone, the chairman of CBS parent company Viacom Inc., said in a phone interview with NEWSWEEK from his Beverly Hills home . His comments come as MSNBC announced it is dropping its daily simulcast of the “Imus in the Morning” radio show, amid furor over Imus' racial slur against the Rutgers women basketball team and the news that major advertisers are withdrawing support for the show.

Redstone's remarks could pressure Moonves into firing Imus (”do the right thing” is an oblique comment—and the title of a Spike Lee film).

This means...
I want him fired, but someone else gets to answer for the loss of profits next quarter.

Since Katrina, I have felt like the press is involved in some sort of weird “vortex” thing where they are determined to bring this country down.

And these past few weeks, I have felt like the pace has accelerated.

I am not ashamed to admit I’m scared.

It’s almost like it’s out of our control now; I watched all the channels, looking for somebody — anybody — talking REASON — and I just didn’t see anybody at all.

I think they want Bush & company destroyed; unfortunately, they’re so blinded by their hate, they don’t even realize they’re taking this country down.

I’ve believed my tagline for a long time.

That’s what I understand. I’m sure she is very happy with recent developments.

Imus is the scapegoat. They can fire him and huff and puff about how sensitive and caring they are. Yet they continue to make fist fulls of $$ from rap music that is far worse than anything Imus said. Hypocrites indeed...

I don't see this period as one of arguing. But instead vetting. Folks are waiting to see if Thompson is really going to get in and let him get his full media examination then they will get serious about forming up sides.

If this process can proceed without the candidates damaging each other, then the process should select someone by July more or less.

If it weren't for Thompson this process of winnowing would complete perhaps a month earlier. Thompson has about 30 days to get in or out at this point.

Newt took himself out in one speech when he accepted the whole global warming non-sense piece. He can still salvage his reputation, but he is just as likely to try to justify his error which would mean that he may become a real problem in the future.

Imus's destruction is a body blow against the Democrats no matter how you look at it. Its a case of the double standard not applying to the advantage of Liberals. The real chilling effect is on the Left. Conservative have been afraid of this sort of gaff for years.

“I agree, but not for his idiotic comments. This whole lynching is total PC hysteria, and even if it starts with an indefensible creep like Imus, where will it end? Who’s next?”

That’s how I feel. I can’t stand Imus, but this is PC overkill to a magnitude which should not be permitted to stand unchallenged.

I am REALLY sick of the protected class of Liberal Citizens in this country who get to designate exactly what words are or are not allowed to be said by others. And I’m not just talking about the Blacks. Same with the American Indians and the great Logo Wars. Hell, a friend in California told me it’s no longer acceptable to call Asians Orientals - that “Oriental” was somehow now an offensive term.

All of these people are so dementedly thin-skinned, I’m surprised their blood doesn’t fall out.

“Doing the right thing” will consist of doing just enough so that all conservatives who are attacked by the PC Crowd in the future can safely be banned for life.

Howlin and all —

If you haven’t read the book Hillary’s Secret War in which FR and other conservative news sites are featured prominently, it is a must read before the next election.

You have correctly nailed that they will be coming for US (FR and other conservative news sites) after they’ve taken care of talk radio conservatives through the Fairness Doctrine or other means.

The books details the intimidation used against conservative web hosts and how conservative voices through this country were abused by Bill Clinton’s IRS.

You aren’t being an alarmist.
