INDIANAPOLIS - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is taking a second shot at describing his hunting experience.
The former Massachusetts governor has called himself a lifelong hunter, yet his campaign acknowledged that he has been on just two hunting trips one when he was 15 and the other just last year.
Campaigning in Indianapolis on Thursday, Romney said he has hunted small game since his youth.
"I'm not a big-game hunter. I've made that very clear," he said. "I've always been a rodent and rabbit hunter. Small varmints, if you will. I began when I was 15 or so and I have hunted those kinds of varmints since then. More than two times."
In Keene, N.H., on Tuesday, Romney had said: "I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life." The next day, the campaign said Romney hunted rabbits in Idaho with cousins as a teenager and shot quail with GOP donors at a game preserve in Georgia in 2006.
Campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Wednesday that Romney wasn't trying to mislead anyone, and he promoted Romney's support of gun-ownership rights.
Romney has also supported gun control. When he ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1994 he backed the Brady law and a ban on assault-style rifles. As governor, he supported the state's strict gun-control laws and signed into law one of the nation's tougher assault weapons laws.
He joined the National Rifle Association last August as a "Lifetime" member.
Ya think?
He tried to sound like a Cuban to the South Florida crowd too...and ended up sounding like Fidel.
LOL
Of course not. Romney's real problem is that he signed a permanent assault weapons ban just a couple short years ago in MA.
Careful, you’ll shoot yer eye out!
It gets more and more evident everyday that Romney wants to be John Kerry. Flipper, hunter, etc. This guy cannot be our President. It would be facinating which position he took on issue one week after the other though.
Yes, he was a big hit down there too. Its sad that he was born in Michigan ( a hunting state) and doesn't know anything about it.
Really, and they conveniently leave out that the NRA has given Mitt a B while Hillary, Obama and Edwards all have F's. So, he's not perfect, but he's near the top. I think he made a mistake trying to get folksy about his past hunting. He clearly did hunt, enjoyed it, doesn't oppose it, considers himself a hunter, but it is not his #1 past-time. Who cares....
Clearly, whether or not one hunts is not the important issue IMO. Support for the 2A is the crucial thing.
On the 31st anniversary of the Gun Owners Action League, Governor Romney declared May 7, 2005 as The Right to Bear Arms Day in Massachusetts to honor the right of decent, law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms in defense of their families, persons, and property and for all lawful purposes, including the common defense.
Not the only 'front runner' who has a similar track record who says he supports the Second Amendment.
Their cluelessness is the dead giveaway.
Now if Jim Zumbo (after his foul-up) can get the 'I-don't-need-one-of-those-rifles' set back on board the Second Amendment, he will have fully redeemed himself in my eyes. Otherwise, the split in gunowners will rear its ugly head and the divide between hunters and shooters could hurt us all.
It is up to all of us to protect all of our firearms, so just say "No" to the likes of Mitt and Rudy.
Rodent hunter?
Do mousetraps count? I bag a couple mice every Fall when they move inside to escape the cool weather.
“I smoked but I didn’t inhale” set the mark for insincere political tap dancers. But if that remark can be topped, this here may be boy that does the trick.
"Vegetarians are cool. All I eat are vegetarians - except for the occasional mountain lion steak." - Ted Nugent
Or this:
"A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity." - Sigmund Freud
I use peanut butter in mine.
Why we need to vett them now. Conservative conversions at this late date are not to be trusted, they are just so much window dressing.
Either you are or you aren't and your track record will tell the tale.
Mitt ain't it.
Whatever it takes to expose folks to the FReepathon banner ads. :-)
Well, not Jim Zumbo
I been using a dried apricot for the longest time, the little varmint finally moved on..
I smear a little peanut butter on a pretzel and put it in the trap. I use no-kill traps and we release the little varmints down at the creek. The one time I used a kill trap it squished the little things head and made a dreadful mess, so it’s no-kill traps for me. I figure they just are looking for food and warmth and I can easily relocate them back to the wild.
I forgot to mention, I have two cats, both are worthless as mousers.
