FBI Agent Killed in N.J. Shootout

READINGTON, N.J. — An FBI agent was killed in a shootout with three bank robbery suspects Thursday in north central New Jersey, a law enforcement official said.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agent's family had not been told of his death, said the agent was alive when brought to University Hospital in Newark by helicopter, but efforts to save him failed.

"He didn't make it," the official said.

Other law enforcement officials, also speaking anonymously because the investigation was ongoing, said agents were investigating a string of recent bank robberies in central New Jersey when they came upon the suspects leaving a bank near Route 22 in Readington. A shootout ensued.

One suspect was captured and two fled to nearby woods, the official said. State and local authorities are searching for the suspects with helicopters and dogs.

Get those miscreants! Prayers for the agent’s family. I wish the agent is met with a warm embrace by Jesus Christ on the other side.

Let’s hear the outcry now from everyone on how wrong the perps were just like they scream when a policeman has to shoot someone. There won’t be any outcry. God bless this man and God bless his family who will shed tears beyond belief.

Everyone knows crooks are wrong. It’s proper to point out when cops are too.

There has been a spate of bank robberies in this area (local to me).

Prayers for this brave officer and the family.

What sidearm do FBI agents carry? I’ve heard Glock .40 and Sig .357

...”State and local authorities are searching for the suspects with helicopters and dogs”....Good idea! first work them over with the dogs then drop ‘em from the helicopter

Ask the suspect about the identities of his accomplices. If he is reticent, use an old method (outlawed by the Geneva convention after WWI, by drawing a knife though a clump of garlic and cutting the suspect, ever so slightly, with the knife - I suggest a toe, to start. By the the time you get to his John, he will tell you anything you want to know. Very simple, very quick - and always effective.

So, in all honesty, what exactly are these reporters calling “nearby woods” in Readington? Other than Round Vally lake, I don’t know of any parcels of undeveloped land in the area.

Glock 22 or 23 in .40SW, IIRC.

The US Secret Service issued the SIG P229 in .357SIG.

I wish they’d get these guys - five copters are circling our house ... I went across the street to my neighbor whose has poor phone reception and out of the blue an unmarked car who turned out to be a cop confronted me. He stated, get back in the house and lock up ... and he’d take care of that and he did.

When it gets dark out ... they won’t find them. There are woods all over and easy places to hide.

That PNC is my bank. I know the people well. Arvins is where we buy our Christmas trees. It’s a real nice family. I hope the SWAT team shoots to kill. Save the tax payers money and send these thugs a message - don’t rob banks in this neck of the woods. We have no crime to really speak of and want it to stay that way.

Undoubtedly you are not very familiar with the area. North of 22 there are large stretches of woodland, field and meadow along the Lamington River including Fox Hollow and Fiddler’s Elbow Country Clubs. If the perp can make it across 78, he theoretically could stay in woods etc. across the estate belt all the way to Chester 15 miles away. Luckily it is still early spring. If the trees were leafed out a person could easily navigate across miles of that area without being seen if they wanted to.

P.S. it’s Round Valley Resevior not lake.

update-

Just one on the loose.

“State police were coordinating the search for a suspect who remained on the loose in woods bordering Hunterdon and Somerset counties, said state police Capt. Al Della Fave.

Close to 100 officers fanned out in the area near Fox Hollow Golf Club to look for the suspect, described as a possible Hispanic male, about 6-foot-2, wearing a sweat shirt and missing a shoe. He was last seen heading on foot toward Route 78, near Route 22.

Della Fave said state police helicopters and K-9 units were assisting in the search for the man, who may be armed.

Police in the area had secured several buildings and barns and were urging residents and business owners to lock their doors and not to approach the suspect.

“He didn’t hesitate in shooting an FBI agent,” Della Fave said.
