TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.
"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

Giuliani also vowed to appoint conservative judges to the bench, though denied such a promise was a "wink and a nod" to conservatives in support of overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision on abortion.
"A strict constructionist judge can come to either conclusion about Roe against Wade," he said. "They can look at it and say, 'Wrongly decided thirty years ago, whatever it is, we'll over turn it.' [Or] they can look at it and say, 'It has been the law for this period of time, therefore we are going to respect the precedent.' Conservatives can come to that conclusion as well. I would leave it up to them. I would not have a litmus test on that."

Cute, but that’s not the answer I am looking for.
I want to know what candidate you support.
I don;t believe that you don’t support anyone...you’e way too opinionated for that.
Why should any of us change if we choose to hold Rudy to the standards that others in the GOP won't?
Haaater! Haaater! That's right out of the Clintonista playbook. Freepers were called Clinton haters for years. It beats dealing with valid criticism.
What do Giulianis abortion positions have to do with the constitution?
Everything. If he sees abortion as a constitutional right because of a flawed SCOTUS decision, he doesn't understand strict constructionism. Yet he says he would appoint strict constructionists. If he doesn't understand the concept, how can he claim such?
Today we need to worry about terrorism, not aboriton.
As many children are aborted each day in this country as persons who died in the WTC.
And who better than Giuliani to fight those who want to harm us.
I can think of many people. Rudy took the WOT so seriously that he pushed a corrupt crony for the most important anti-terror job in the country.
Go back to your local Rudy HQ for some new talking points. We flattened this batch over six weeks ago.
Simple. Pick a conservative candidate - one who has views mostly consistant with the Republican Party Platform. There's a number of them. Support that candidate or even all of them.
I wonder why that is so hard for you and others to understand.
You don’t have to change.
It doesn’t change the fact that he’s still in the lead...so maybe, while you may not be changing, the Party might be.
You asked where to go for guideance. I told you. Now, how is Rudy a good fit for the GOP platform?
I want EV to tell me who he supports.
I think you're just hijacking this thread with a stupid demand.
This is going to help Romney.
It can't be that simple...EV can't seem to be able to do it.
I asked EV, not his hand puppet.
Then it won’t be a party I will be a part of in the future.
Me neither.
Who do you support in 2008?
Even Spiff says that it's a simple thing to do.
Except for EV it seems.
I guess you're happy that you would become a GOP centrist instead of being on the far left of the party.
But conservatives are less than thrilled about the prospect of such a GOP shift. So excuse us for giving you flack for such a viewpoint on a conservative website that tries to keep the GOP from lurching in such a direction.
And that's a good thing to you? The most liberal Republican presidential candidate EVER is in the lead and the Republican Party may be going more liberal. And you're celebrating that?! Only a liberal would be happy about such things. Why would a liberal like you bother themselves posting on a conservative forum like this?
And that’s quite possible too.
If the bulk of the Party moves to the left, then a whole lot of people may go elsewhere.
Giuliani’s support within the membership of the GOP may be indicative of either a move by the membership to a more centrist position, or an acknowledgment that people vote for candidates based on image rather than substance.
You’re right. He is honest and I give him credit for that. I even respect that a lot. But I can’t vote for him in the primary.
I'm not getting flack for my viewpoints, I'm getting flack for asking EV to tell me who he supports.
Bad case of project you have there, calling me dishonest.
I'm not getting flack for my viewpoints, I'm getting flack for asking EV to tell me who he supports.
You're getting flack for both. And for hijacking this thread with your spam making a stupid demand.
Given what I know about every GOP candidate ACTIVELY seeking the nomination, and coupled with my best guess as to which candidate can defeat the DNC nominee in a general election, I support Rudy Giuliani.
Do I agree with everything he stands for?
I don't.
But I agree with him on more issues than I do with anyone else, and I think that he can beat any DNC candidate actively seeking the nomination.
Will I vote for him in the primaries?
If the field remains as it stands right now, yes I will.
You can’t be attacking me for viewpoints that I haven’t inroduced into this discussion.
