AUSTIN, Tex., March 29 In 1999, Matthew Dowd became a symbol of George W. Bushs early success at positioning himself as a Republican with Democratic appeal.
A top strategist for the Texas Democrats who was disappointed by the Bill Clinton years, Mr. Dowd was impressed by the pledge of Mr. Bush, then governor of Texas, to bring a spirit of cooperation to Washington. He switched parties, joined Mr. Bushs political brain trust and dedicated the next six years to getting him to the Oval Office and keeping him there. In 2004, he was appointed the presidents chief campaign strategist.
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
In a wide-ranging interview here, Mr. Dowd called for a withdrawal from Iraq and expressed his disappointment in Mr. Bushs leadership.

Once a RAT, always a traitor.
NYT....buh bye.
"Criticizing the President makes him less conservative."
Then he is a sociopath.
Oh brother. We're fighting totalitarian regimes, and you'd have us become one.
So we need to get on board when the President wants to grant amnesty to illegal aliens?
We should have let the Bin Laden-loving Arab sheiks control our ports?
Looks like a lot of Freepers will be swinging by the neck under your criteria.
The reason we are at war goes far beyond physical safety. As important as that is, the terrorists, at their worst, can only harm a tiny percentage of us.
When they destroy our freedom, our right to speak from our hearts, right or wrong, THAT is where they hurt us. America is more than a land mass, a group of citizens. It is an idea!
The President is a great man with great goals, who has done some wonderful things. But he is a human being, sometimes fallible and mislead. And ultimately, he is our leader, not our ruler. He is beholden to us.
BTW: If, by some disaster, Hillary is elected, remember to properly worship her, lest ye find yourself doing the "traitor's wiggle". After all, by your standards, to criticize the President (regardless of political philosophy or party membership), is treason.
This anti-Bush article in the Paper of Treason will set up his welcome to the open arms of psama-obama's democrat campaign.
Stop being so rational! Are you trying to kill this story? (/sarcasm)
Ping...have you seen this??
I imagine that's his goal.....
Just did. Thanks for the ping................I think. :)
"If he held this position, he's also responsible for Bush's policies... as people voted Bush a president based on his campaign...
I agree that Mr. Dowd is complicit in Bush's failures as "people voted Bush a president based on his campaign..."
This Mr. Dowd is a hypocrit.
I'll concede that Bush hasn't made some of the wisest appointments and is loyal beyond a fault in many cases.
But his tax cuts have surged our economy ahead despite 9-11, multiple hurricanes, fires etc. and unemployment at an all time low.
And with no attacks on American soil in the past 5 years and few (if any) of any real size or impact on American embassies abroad, I'd never call him stupid but instead call him highly successful.
"Do we know that this guy wasn't a plant or total-Rino when he came to Bush's camp?"
Good point.
If he was a plant, the Bush camp made another mistake in hiring him.
I'll focus on just one overriding Dowd view...that Bush did not do enough to work with Democrats and build consensus. Bull s__t. He's done 10000% more to work with them, than has been recipricated. They call him dumb, a murderer, a monkey, a lair, etc, etc, but never once have a heard them discuss compromise or working together (unless working together means doing exactly what the democrats do). What a jerk-off, this Dowd is.
"Bush is loyal to a fault, and never speaks ill of anyone, and yet people keep doing this to him. It's sickening."
He's basically a good guy, but with a weak spine and afraid to upset the boat and his enemies.
Had he had more spine, he would have used his veto power more often. A classical eager beaver.
Mr. Dowd went on to say that, "Since I discovered my girl friend was a liberal, it's been all I can do to keep her from dumping me. My new stand on Bush has been really helpful in that regard."
George Bush has never even been able to personally and persuasively explain why he took the country to war in Iraq.
Here in Florida on the sports radio program I listen to, they have a promo composed of funny bits from various sources. An actual Bush speech is excerpted in which he says, "I will continue to articulate what I believe, and what I believe, and I believe what I believe is right." Even in a sentence where this most inarticulate of all American presidents had the gall to use to the word 'articulate', he still screwed up what he meant to say! It's dispiriting and pathetic at the same time.
Freepers may defend him. I wouldn't expect anything else from this forum. But Freepers need to understand that huge swaths of the country, including some well disposed to the conservative message, have turned away from the Bush WH. And I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that Jim Robinson's numbers are way down on this forum as well.
George Bush has been a disaster. He's a well meaning, muddleheaded, bumbling fool whose uninspired and uninspiring leadership will at the very least cost the Republicans the WH and both houses of Congress in 2008.
This clown has issues and GWBush is the least of them.
What a turncoat ... shows he was merely a mercenary .. in it for the $$, not principles, as does what shows up on the website he founded: hotsoup.com:
