AUSTIN, Tex., March 29 In 1999, Matthew Dowd became a symbol of George W. Bushs early success at positioning himself as a Republican with Democratic appeal.
A top strategist for the Texas Democrats who was disappointed by the Bill Clinton years, Mr. Dowd was impressed by the pledge of Mr. Bush, then governor of Texas, to bring a spirit of cooperation to Washington. He switched parties, joined Mr. Bushs political brain trust and dedicated the next six years to getting him to the Oval Office and keeping him there. In 2004, he was appointed the presidents chief campaign strategist.
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
In a wide-ranging interview here, Mr. Dowd called for a withdrawal from Iraq and expressed his disappointment in Mr. Bushs leadership.

THIS GUY---EX DEM--(NOT REALLY--he was never EX}_Obama supporter--says volumes....
acts like Bush never tried for a new tone in DC. The main trouble is that he DID try..and try..and try. He should have cut line after the first year and quit turning his back to be stabbed. DC is NOT Texas.
vaudine
He might try an Islamic country if he wants a dose of reality.
This guy was for Bush before he was against Bush.
It's the new liberal litmus test...
This guy was a Democat strategist, and then changed parties to work for then Gov. Bush. Is it any surprise that as soon as he feels his interests or beliefs aren't being met, he turns tail and runs? Afterall he turned tail and ran after being disappointed with the Clinton years. He sounds like a very unhappy person who blames Bush for his son's joining the military. The article doesn't say anything about what type of relationship he has with his son, but somehow I can't believe there isn't a bit of tension between a son who wants to go to war, and a father who wants to march in protest against that same war. Dowd's either an opportunist, who changes parties each time the wind changes directions, or he's simply a malcontent who will never be happy with anything anybody says or does.
I just have to ask...that's sarcasm, right?
What has this dude been smoking .. because it's obvious that he's not paid attention ... that or he's a mole
I'd say it's fear of doing jail time .. because you know Clinton didn't do the dirty work himself
>>Shame on Bush in believing the "new tone" crap...it was a trap that has bitten him many times.<<
I couldn't agree more.
Like I said...there are SO many things.
His take on Bolton is the one that had me convinced that he is crazy.
Coward .. he didn't even have th balls to talk to the Preisdent
Bush was the best choice of the lot, however, his new tone has shafted Conservatives time and time again. It's time for the Conservative tone in '08.
A Serial Turncoat.
I also guess he would want Pres. Bush to THANK him for NOT writing that editorial he was talking about...
No...he didn't write that...he just gave an interview to the biggest enemy Pres. Bush has..the MSM, and more precisely, The NY Times.
How soon before he gets an hour on Meet the Press?? Betcha he will be on Hairball on Monday. He is gonna get all kinds of "love" now...
He also has decided that OSAMA OBAMA is the best candidate in 2008????
What a cruel joke that was played on Prs. Bush by letting this guy have as much of an influence as I think he did.
'...while GW wasn't what I really had hoped he would be...'
Considering what GW has had to deal with....the attacks on our country from external enemies and constant attacks on him and his policies from internal forces...namely the Democrats and the media...maybe he was not able to accomplish all he intended or handle matters the way he would have liked to. He got no cooperation from the Dims and some RINO's hindered some of his efforts. But, he HAS protected the country, kept the economy strong, appointed 2 conservative judges to the Supreme Court....
I cannot begin to imagine the state of our great country if Gore or Kerry (UGH) were President. Thank God, George W Bush is our President. He is a good man and a patriot.
He was upset the President didn't meet with Cindy Sheehan at Crawford ???
If this NYT article is true ... then he's a flaming liberal ... and a mole
