Self destructing? We are having the kinda of debate that should be had in a primary. Which direction to go. GOP conservative platform or something "more inclusive".
It doesn't have to be GOP conservative platform or something more inclusive.
Newt's platform ideas, for instance, didn't even take time to mention one sentence about abortion. Oh, some freeper will be along to say that the platform wasn't detailed about any social issues, but we all know that's a lie because welfare was certainly mentioned and if ever there was a social/fiscal issue, it's welfare.
It's only been in recent years that the GOP started to pander to a certain group of social conservatives and it hasn't worked out terribly well for the Republicans. Social conservatives are often my way or the highway people and seem terribly naive about politics in general. Most of us understand that there are lots of kinds of conservatives and that we'll never get 100% of what we want and just vote for the person who represents most of what we want.
As well, the politicians who are most indebted to social conservatives seem to be the kind of politicians who think that Christianity requires that one turn the other cheek when getting kicked in the a** by Democrats and the media. I've never seen a Republican party so filled with weenies who don't defend their philosophies or the administration.
I agree with you. Now is the time to argue the relative merits of the Republican candidates...not in the run up to the general election.
