I can see a merit base, but the problem is the workability. We have a friend from a spanish speaking country. He was invited to this country years ago by Columbia University. When they met him, they realized that he was a pro Western Civ and pro US person and not a ranting communist wackjob.
So Columbia revoked the invitation.
He stayed. He did not use anyone else’s information. He did not claim 7 or 8 exemptions on his W4(immediate sign of something for the IRS to look at, if it cared about helping to ID illegal aliens). He loved everything about this country and he lived in fear and guilt. He did wrong and I can’t help but think that he punished himself.
But laws are made to apply to all and he had been in violation.
In 1986, President Reagan gave Amnesty, which he took and was grateful for. He Americanized his first name and despite his beginnings, this is the kind of person I’d like to see some kind of path.
But how do you sort through millions?
And how do you verify any of the stories? If someone stole an ID, how do you find someone who has no trail of his or her own?
The other point is that if it’s too draconian, we get the worst of both worlds. No one who should apply would and those who have selective hearing will come and think that it’s all okay because Mexico surrenders.
Bahbah, did you read about this?

Exciting, even if it may be too far to go to. :-)
No one can explain to me why this simple plan would not work.
All illegals, during a period of no prosecution [one month, one year?], who want to live and work here legally would go to the nearest US Post Office to be photographed and fingerprinted. All of those illegals who applied and who passed a FBI screen for crime and/or drugs would receive a working pass. It could be permanent; it could be valid for a given number of years; it could be valid only while holding a job. Because they came here legally, there would be no opportunity for citizenship UNLESS they return to their home of origin and apply like everyone else.
Why would this not satisfy the “needs” of businesses, the illegals and those like me who don’t want citizenship sold to illegals?
