I don’t think that there was a fine in 1986. Or in the 1960’s either. I am not sure, but I think that the first was in 64.

To be serious for a moment. I am greatly offended by the President offering citizenship or a “path to citizenship” to those who pay a fine. It is like the Popes of old selling special dispensation for a price. It is in fact, putting citizenship up for sale.

While I am in total opposition to any sort of citizenship to those who came here illegally, I would rather see it offered for free, on some merit basis, than to sell it. It cheapens the privilege of citizenship and it is an insult to those of us who are already citizens. If they push this through, it will hurt, perhaps mortally, the Republicans chances at the polls in 2008. If Karl Rove thinks these folks will vote Republican, he is smoking rope!
