I think Menu Foods was actually buying processed wheat gluten from China, not raw wheat. The slave labor wages in the PRC likely offset our costs making the gluten here.
It's amazing now, how many raw materials are shipped all the way to China, processed and then shipped all the way back to North America.
A fully loaded 40' container shipped from the PRC costs about $2,500.00 US in freight charges. Despite that expense, it is still cheaper to use the $0.50 a -day- labor charges manufactures can get in China.

why on Gods green earth are they buying wheat from China in Canada?This was my question, too. And if the whole manufacture occurs in Canada, what's the deal with Albany? And, does the USG still pay our farmers subsidies not to grow wheat?
