It doesn't sound as if he is obsessing over homosexuals. (I refuse to use your language.) He was commenting on the situation concerning General Pace. I'm sure that he has also made comments about social security, medicare, terrorists and gangs on other occasions.
The homosexual issue is important, along with other issues. The gay rights movement is interested in indoctrinating children with their viewpoint by infiltrating schools, redefining marriage, and creating special status for themselves through "hate crimes" legislation. They are breaking up the Episcopal Church and are the main group responsible for spreading AIDS in the US. I could go on with this list. They insist on drawing attention to themselves and their agenda at all times. Social conservatives would not focus on them nearly as much if gay rights supporters weren't so vocal and persistent about their (political) desires. Remember - they are demanding radical change. Social conservatives are just trying to defend themselves from this ill-considered assault on traditional morality.
I wish that these unhappy people could find happiness within themselves instead of thinking that the rest of the world needs to change in order for them to be happy. A little humility and introspection would go a long way in the case of the gay rights movement.
