I'll tell you where this goes. When the first Great Debate came around...it was over the most significant science idea in decades...that evolution just might be true. T. H. Huxley went into the debate and clobbered the opposition to evolution and set the slam dunk of acceptance. We may stand around today and openly question it...but its still running the show...that shows the power of that one debate.

Here we have a debate of the same caliber and we may actually see the same caliber of debate artist. T. H. Huxley was one of the best debate scientists of the period. He was prepared when he walked in. Today...we have Lord Monckton prepared and ready.

Adding to this episode...the good Lord Monckton...was a policy adviser to Baroness Thatcher. He didn't get the job because he was a wussie at debate. This guy could be in the class of Mike Tyson/Hulk Hogan for debate. He doesn't go into a debate situation unprepared. He has had lots of practice in this art. For those who might not remember Lord Monckton's recent venture into American history...when U.S. Senators Rockefeller and Snowe wrote a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Exxon-Mobil asking him to stop funding scientists who reject global warming...it was Lord Monckton who stepped into the fray and wrote the letter...which was a brief reminder to the senators of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and calling on them to reverse their position or resign. He wasn't joking. He knows US history, constitution, and is more than just a lightweight player in the fight against global warmers.

Finally let us consider this...he wasn't hired by Ms. Thatcher to stand down to anything...his job was to set the policy agenda for British government. Somewhere behind all of this episode...you have to think that Ronald Reagan is sitting quietly and smiling...having rearranged the board for the dismantlement of the second Soviet Union.

Al Gore is in a terrible position. He can turn this down and walk away....thus casting a long shadow over his agenda. The Lord has easily won the situation and proven Al wasn't capable of proving his point (same punch for Jimmy Carter's recent analysis of the Israeli situation...if you can't stand for your words or agenda...then you lose).

If Al Gore goes into this debate...he cannot win. Lord Monckton...3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley...will deliver knockout punches and set the honorable vice-president down. There will be dark moment that day with millions of global warmers...weeping themselves to sleep because their cause lost. And somewhere out there....you can only believe that a Ronald Reagan chuckle will be heard.
