EIB Interview: Tom DeLay
Rush Limbaugh ^ | 16 March 2007 | Rush Limbaugh

Posted on 03/16/2007 4:34:55 PM PDT by radar101

RUSH: All right, I’ll give you a few names, and you give you your impression of them if you want, your impression of them as conservative leaders and potential presidential material

RUSH: Fred Thompson.

DELAY: Fred Thompson is a good, solid conservative. I disagree with him on immigration, but he was distinguished in the Senate. He certainly has a persona about him that people like and he could communicate a message.

RUSH: Duncan Hunter. You know him well.

DELAY: I love Duncan Hunter. The only thing I disagree with Duncan on is trade policy. He's a protectionist. But as far as having a commander-in-chief, he couldn't be any better. I mean, he's the best.

I was listening to this today. It was a blow away interview - so much info.

Delay's analysis on why conservatives lost kept me glued to the radio.

DELAY: While we're doing that little, the Democrats understood, number one, that McCain neutered the party through his McCain-Feingold, and they had to create this whole new party, and that's what they did. It took 'em five to six years to do it, but they did it and they did it well.

RUSH: So basically they took advantage of a loophole in the McCain-Feingold bill to create the 527s and the Republicans don't have a lot in that area.

This interview scared me to death. The Dems have everything in order...they have all the money behind them, hidden under the guise of legitimate organizations. I almost cried after this interview.

RUSH: Okay. It doesn't sound like you've made a choice among the names that I mentioned to you.

DELAY: Not even close. (Laughing.)

RUSH: Does that mean none of them fire you up?

DELAY: There isn't a candidate out there that fires me up. I'm a close friend of Sam Brownback. He is a committed, dyed-in-the-wool conservative. Can he put together a campaign? It's too early to tell.

Yep, me too. After lunch, I sat in my car for about twenty extra minutes listening. DeLay's comments about the size and strength of the Democrat machine are worrisome.

I thought this was interesting:

There's just a lot of things that we did that were accomplished and thank goodness that we did. But your e-mailer is absolutely right, and I have to take some responsibility for this. We sucked at communication. It was our biggest weakness. We just could not get it together. Thank God that we had you and others that at least understood what was going on and were talking about it. But yes, we needed a national communications strategy. We needed to put our brightest and most articulate people out front, and we needed to tell our story over and over again and stand up to the national media...

Delay is confirming big time what we all know, which is that we're getting killed in the communication department. It's just incredible how we're failing to attend to something so vital. I heard an interview with Douglas Feith the other day and he was saying the same thing. He was totally baffled by the utter ineptitude and passivity on the PR front. Said it was the thing that puzzled him the most about this administration.

One other thought -- as I was listening to DeLay, it occurred to me who is going to win the Republican primary. Not the exact person per se, but the type of person. It's going to be the guy who seems like he'll do the best job of FIGHTING BACK. Conservatives want a conservative, of course, but right now what they crave is a fighter. I know I do. We're sick of this "new tone" crap and want someone who will stand up for a change. I think this bodes well for your Guilliani and maybe your Thompson types -- guys who seem authentically tough -- and poorly for your polished Mitt Romney types.

My wife came in panicked too, but remember, the Dems are over there saying the SAME THING about us---that we have all the conservative media, that we have business, the money, etc.

It will only take one thing will change all this in a heartbeat: if just ONE REPUBLICAN WILL STAND UP TO THE DEMS ON EVERY ISSUE, from Gonzolez to Libby to Iraq, and NOT GIVE AN INCH, you will see such an incredible groundswell on our side of the aisle that it won't matter what the guy's specific issues are.

It could be Rudy, it could be Fred Thompson, I don't know. But the "winner" of the GOP nomination will be the first one that figures out that the DEMS are the enemies, not other Republicans.
