If Fred Thompson enters the race, he's the perfect candidate. He's far better on the issues than Rudy; he's just as much a "public figure" and "celebrity" due to his "Law and Order" job; and he can just as easily defeat Hillary. He came out against the Libby verdict (the ONLY one to do so among the "known" Republicans, which greatly increases his "fighter" edge over Rudy).

Right now, he's the one guy standing between Rudy and the White House, and Fred's my candidate if he enters.

If Thompson enters the race, he'll immediately pick up a lot of undecideds and much of Rudy's support will jump ship. Of course many McCain supporters are only there because he's known and he's not Rudy. He'd tank within days.

"Right now, he's the one guy standing between Rudy and the White House,..." then you can start printing the President Giuliani labels. While I like Fred his performance as a Senator was less than stellar disappointing at least my hopes for him. And after the successful demonization of George W Good Ole Boys are out of the question this time.

He does not appear to have the drive necessary to take the office either. Of course, should he win the nomination there would be no hesitation on my part in voting for him.

The Democrats know Hillary! will lose the general election and will most likely nominate Al Gore. She cannot get over 50%, which makes it mathematically impossible for her to win if the GOP holds & a viable 3rd party candidate fails to emerge on the right.

Rudy stacks up well against Hillary!; it's hard to imagine even the most conservative voters hesitating to vote with the fear of her in their minds. Gore, OTOH, appeals a little more to the middle 5-10%, but even more importantly, could tip the 1-3% hard right into passivity. Ask yourself this question: while you may dislike Gore, does he stir the same visceral reaction as Clinton?

If the Dems are smart and nominate Gore, then the GOP is going to have to reconsider Rudy. If the Dems want to commit suicide and nominate Hillary!, then the GOP has much more flexibility.
