He doesn't understand the nature of GOD and he doesn't understand his own nature. GOD gave us total and complete freedom and HE will also hold us personally accountable for our actions, and allow us to live with the consequenses. If GOD sees fit to not limit our freedom who is he to imply GOD made a mistake?
I recently read an article by some Spanish Catholic commentator who said basically the same thing. He argued that the state is immoral for not allowing man the chance to have free will and do good (instead it obligates him to do its version of good) and also that it was wrong for the state to oblige anyone to give anything they earned to anyone else because it caused people to live in a financial way that they might not choose on their own. Regardless of what the Bible says (according to the writer) about giving to the poor, a man should do as he pleases and the final assessment should be between each individual and God.
I thought it was interesting. And I have begun to absorb this into my own philosophy.
I also think it's interesting how the anti-gambling pro-nanny state posts here remind me of the arguements I hear from socialists boneheads in my country ALL THE TIME about gambling and numerous other topics.

Cool, so I'm not a total heretic!
Seriously though, I would love to see that article, if it was in English since I don't read much spanish.

Here in the US people are very generous when they have a passion for the charity but with the state taking wealth and giving it to it's created charity people are more stingy. Look at what happened with Katrina and the American Red Cross after 9/11. People gave out of love and found out the money was not allocated as originally implied or that the money wasn't used to actually help the helpless but goes to business and local govt. and gets mishandled. People are less and less willing to give.

I believe if people weren't "forced" to give they'd give more and they'd have more to give.
