BROKEN bones, lacerations and extensive bruising are what pass for police interview techniques in Robert Mugabe's crumbling Zimbabwe, and one former Sydney grandmother is among those on the receiving end.
Sekai Holland, 61, is in a Harare hospital after being arrested alongside her Movement for Democratic Change colleagues during a weekend prayer rally.
Mrs Holland was subjected to hours of bloody violence in a police station at the hands of 15 men who, her husband alleges, were paid large sums to beat the opposition politicians.
"My wife is in very bad condition according to the doctors," Jim Holland, an Australian, told SBS Television last night.
Mrs Holland received extensive bruising, lacerations and head injuries, and was twice knocked unconscious after blows to the head during her detention, Mr Holland said.
Her arm and foot were deliberately "smashed" during the assaults, and she was later forced to walk on her foot, he said.
She was due to have pins inserted in the broken limbs overnight, and a scan to check for undetected head injuries.
Mr Holland said his wife was in relatively good spirits despite her ordeal, and determined to keep protesting. "Sekai said that she knew they had won, because none of the leadership cracked under the torture, and they are all determined to continue the fight for justice," he said.
The couple met in Australia, where Mrs Holland lived for 20 years, before returning to Africa in 1981. They have two children and a grandchild in Sydney. Their son, Kudzo, yesterday called on the international community to step in.
The Opposition Leader, Kevin Rudd, who was briefed by Mrs Holland on the opposition movement in Zimbabwe last year, called on the Government to seek a United Nations resolution condemning the Mugabe regime. ...
