This movie is PRO war (WOT) and pits pre-Islam nations against the west.

Why do you say that? Persia was not an Islamic country at the time of Thermopolae and wouldnt be for another 1100 years. It was Zoroastran.

When the scumbag character who to my eyes is thinly disguised as a Democrat (he is secretly in league with Xerxes and fights against sending reinforcements to the 300) gets his just rewards, the audience burst out in spontaneous cheering and applause. Ahh, ...I love living in a red state.

I live in Los Angeles and I saw it Saturday night. When the corrupt senator gets it the audience broke out in cheers as well. The movie also got applause at the end, which is unusual at the theater I go to.

It was a brilliant movie. The best I've seen since United 93.

The point of the story is that a courageous, diciplined, motivated group, though small, can eviscerate a much larger force.

The Spartan force of hopelites were actually a blocking force against an estimated 45-50,000 Persians. As the Persians crossed the Marathon plain on their march to Athens, the Spartans were deployed in their path in order to buy time for the rest of the army to prepare a defense of the cities. They were killed to the last man but accomplished their objective, to cripple the Persian army and blunt its resolve.

Funny, I live in Utah (the reddest of the red states) and the theater I attended did the exact same thing. All cheered when the Queen gutted the treasonous politician.
Do you think it was meant that the politician member of the council who was on the Queen's side looked like Lincoln? And that the treasonous politician spoke like John Kerry and acted like Bill Clinton?

Please read this part of what I wrote, "pre-Islam nations".

And also you would have to actually SEE the movie, enough said.

Sounds like it may have some great potential.

Anything that can upset the "Lil Nut-Job" has to have some merit.

Bring it on!

Two thumbs up (plus a few severed body parts).

Seriously, it was not history, just a legend writ large, taking advantage of the full dismenions of the big screen. You get good guys and bad guys you can tell apart, and bravery and honor get reaffirmed.

I only wish the queen had done this in the first place (instead of what she did). Still, better late than never. And yes, the good politician did look like Abe Lincoln, as I told my wife during the show.

The Spartans were not just decimated they were wiped out to the man. But before that happened they killed tens of thousands of Persians and accomplished their intent of holding up the advance of the Persian army.

Fortunate for them since the Spartans were actually decimated at the battle of Thermopylae

Not to split hairs, but they where annilhilated to the last man. Decimation is the killing of every tenth (10th) man in Roman legions almost hundreds of years later and was a punitive, rather than combative action.

In today's lexicon, it is sometimes used to demonstrate that a military unit has become combat inneffective.

True, but I htink it showed the lengths to wchich she would sacrifice to give her husband the help and support he needed. And just like Democrats nowadays, the politician was more than willing to let her do that, all the while never intending on living up to his end of the bargain. In fact, he used this against her. Frank Miller must have watched some the modern dems for inspiration for that character.

I agree. I think it also showed the dangers of trying to bargain and play politics with such people as the senator. Ultimately, no matter what you give them, or no matter what they promise, they will betray you.

A valuable lesson for our Democrat-appeasing Republican leadership who continually bend over backwards for the liberals and only get screwed in return.

I've not seen this movie yet, but it's at the top of my "to do" list. I'll be seeing it with my 22-year old son, who's an Iraqui Freedom vet. His battalion was named "The Spartans", and their motto- "Fight in the Shade", of course!

Oh boy, is he gonna love it!

And thank you for his service!

Here's my feeble attempt at a review:

There was once a massive and overt threat of total destruction closing in on "the west" that most of the west tried real hard to ignore.

There was, in the west, a powerful cultural control on the opinion, beliefs and this powerful influence had no counter and was corrupt to its very core. (for illustrative purposes, msm serves an appropriate model)

There was a leader of a powerful state that chose to stand up to the threat but this leader had to suffer the machinations of traitors and cowards in order to send forces to oppose this threat coming to destroy the west.

The force selected by this leader were, one and all, men of honor, integrity and loyalty. These men also drew strength from equally strong women in their culture. (not exactly modern as we also have women of honor, integrity and strength wearing our uniforms these days too :) )

This force (The 300) said UUHRAA allot. But, since they were foreign devils (to us at least) and heathen, they pronounced it backwards.

There was a coalition of the willing that joined with this force of 300 and were "good to go" as long as what was going down wasnt too scary, dangerous or tiring.

The 300 were undermined by treasonous government representatives at home.

The 300 fought according to the highest standards of honor until the bitter end without breaking, without losing resolve, without running away.

The 300 went to war, Sparta went to the mall.

Why do liberals & MSM critics hate 300?

Simple. The speech by the Queen to the Council had them squirming in their seats.

"I am here for all those voices that cannot be heard. Mothers, daughters, fathers, sons. Three hundred families that bleed for our rights, and the very principles this very room was built upon. We are at war, gentlemen. We must send the entire Spartan army to aid our king in the preservance of not just ourselves, but of our children. Send the army for the preservance of liberty, send it for justice, send it for law and order, send it for reason. But most importantly send our army for hope....."

They don't like to be reminded that we are at war with a foe that wants us too to knell and submit, and that only by force of arms by others better than themselves will the freedoms they enjoy be preserved.

I'm going to try to convince my wife to watch it with me at the IMAX (yes, there is an IMAX version).

Tell her it's full of buff men wearing speedos.

Even with that, it's a fantastic movie :-)
