It's definitely not sour grapes, and it was absolutely not my intention to have it read that way.

I can understand something educational that a child might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience, but an amusement park?

Good for you for the bachelor's degree and the successful business. I have two masters' and a successful career. So it worked out for both of us.

Homeschool, it is cheaper than private school.

He likes the school he goes to. The teacher actually taught the kids how to sing "God Bless the USA", which is verboten to P.C. police in two different ways. I was amazed when he told me that. But they do not have the resources to keep up with his advanced reading, and the magnet school does and seperates kids by ability and interest. We did homeschool him in a way. He never attended pre-school of any kind and he learned to read before age 3. But that isn't possible for us now as he has a a sister and my wife and I are in business together. Private school is completely out. We cannot afford it.

The principal of my kids grammar school was thrilled that I wanted to take my 2 on a 2 week trip to the SW.

His comment "They will learn a lot more on that trip than they will in the classroom for the same amount of time. Anything they miss will be easy to catch up on."

"Then and today, school is something that is squeezed in between our more serious activities"

Wow. Imagine that something could actually be more important than going to school every single day of the year, like family trips where the family bonds and grows closer.

The amazing thing is that that many private school kids and homeschool kids wind up with much less total time in class but they actually do better in school.

Attendance requirements are not necessarily useful except to indoctrinate students in the idea of being able to show up for work every day. I have a niece who is going to an alternative school -- 1 day in class and 4 days self-study. Her grades and her general attitude are both better now.
