Step-mothers are the tangible evidence of a broken family.
These kids saw their father treat their mother badly and then treat this stranger much better.
How can they not resent her?

Just because their is a step mom does not mean there was a divorce. The father could be a widower. It's not by any means the majority of cases, but a step parent does not mean a "broken home".

As a second wife and step mother who, by the way, had nothing to do with my husband's divorce, I must ask you to not paint step moms with a broad brush.
I pretty much raised my step son as my own and love him dearly. Some of us step moms are not so bad.
