U.S. assails Chen's moves in direction of independence

Washington called President Chen Shui-bian's pledge to push for independence "unhelpful" Monday and reiterated its stance against independence for the island Beijing regards as a renegade province.

"As it is well-established, the U.S. does not support independence for Taiwan," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

"President (George W.) Bush has repeatedly underscored his opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo by either Taipei or Beijing because this threatens regional peace and stability, U.S. national interests and Taiwan's own welfare," McCormack said.

He reminded that Chen had pledged in his 2000 and 2004 inaugurations to not declare independence, change the island state's name, or advocate other sovereignty themes.

"President Chen's fulfillment of his commitments is a test of leadership, dependability and statesmanship and of his ability to protect Taiwan's interests, its relations with others and to maintain peace and stability in the Strait," McCormack said.

On Sunday Chen told a group of Taiwan independence advocates that "Taiwan wants independence, Taiwan wants to change its name, Taiwan wants a new constitution, Taiwan wants development."

Such rhetoric in the past has angered Beijing, and raised concerns in the United States, which has pledged to protect Taiwan from Chinese military aggression.

Some do. Just last week yet another seeker after truth bothered to Google it and lo! there it is. Granted, few seem to get it. China, of course, sees only the Nationalist Chinese still camped there and isn't so concerned with Taiwan itself so long as pirates and French aren't allowed to operate out of there. There is no telling whether somebody in the White House gets it, but from their statements they appear to. Some things must remain unspoken so that they may continue without opening the can of worms.

But the the personal attacks they initiated on me have been just fine with you, eh? Spare me your selective indignation. People who read my posts over time know that I never strike first. But I do strike back in spades.

You know the object here is to find some measure of truth from the information and facts as we can discern them.

I looked several times at their posts and while they were augmentative I did not see the personal attacks.

I will look again but I just did not see them.

This is not a tit for tat place.. If you can with facts, reason and compassion carry the day...well we all learn . Our country and it's people benefit.

You went back and forth between rational discourse and rage then just unloaded on several people..

One time I pointed out you had said nothing substantiative in 4 postings.

You seemed to respond and started communicating again..

Then Bam! you started cranking off personal attacks..

While I disagree with your evaluation of China I thought there is something positive to be learned in reading your opinion. We all would like to conclude that there is some hope for the Chinese people that war is not inevitable..

You genuinely deserve a nice ZOT for personal attacks Calling people names just hardens their hearts against your position.

Why not apologize to the people you have insulted. They paid you the courtesy to respond to your comments.. They took time from their lives to hear what you have to say.. You took the time to respond. For goodness sake treat them as you would be treated.. Finally if you think they have not spoken to you reasonably make reference and correct them. Don't verbally bash them.
