And, anyway, what does that have to do with Cheney giving way to someone who would run?

You know, I don't think Cheney's stepping down for anyone, but if he did, can you think of a better way to put the brakes on the Democrats' legislative agenda than to tie them up for months over confirming Cheney's replacement?
Still, the main problem with that is whoever the candidate is would have to be REAL good to come away from that political colonoscopy we know as a confirmation hearing looking good enough to run for President. I'm not sure any of the current candidates could pull it off, and if they could, they probably wouldn't need the advantage of being Vice President in the first place.

While it's fun to imagine the Dems all in a tizzy over confirmation hearings, I don't think maybe it's better to let them "legislate" since they're bound to step in it sometime.

Wanta make the dems go nuts? Install Newt as VP.

Wow! I kept thinking Ford was Speaker .. not Carl. But .. I should have realized it was a dem House at that time and Ford would surely not have been Speaker.

Good one. And name Rummy as Secretary of State. Maybe he would clean house over there.

Quite frankly .. Cheney stepping down would be a stupid move. If people are thinking that Cheney's replacement would be an automatic shoooo-in for 2008 - I don't agree.
Besides .. why would Bush appoint somebody who was not going to be of any help to him .. because the person would be campaigning from the day they took office.
