My uncle Ed Linn, who was a very well-known and respected writer, and a dyed-the-wool conservative, (and my political mentor) as well as a longtime FReeper (who was hailed here when he passed on some years ago) always bemoaned the fact that Conservatives tend to eat their own, as you put it. It seems to be fatal flaw among some of them.
