Well being a real southerner with a real southern drawl, I have to say that her miserable attempt to sound like a hillbilly should thoroughly embarrass anyone associated with or who is supporting her campaign. This was simply pathetic!

I was born and raised in Selma, though I haven't lived there in over 20 years. As a "Selmaian," I found her performance so off the wall that at first I thought she was trying to be funny. Once I realized she was serious then it affirmed what I had intuitively known for years: the woman is simply not very bright. Her lack of understanding of the culture of the deep South is astounding, especially given the fact that she had lived in Arkansas for many years.
One of the most common errors of perception is that there is one monolithic Southern accent; nothing could be further from the truth, especially in the Blackbelt region of Alabama (the central region of places like Selma and Montgomery). There is Black southern (which sounds nothing in the world like the form of language spoken by inner city Blacks), and White southern. But even within White southern you have clear demarcations. The generic redneck accent of the Blackbelt is remarkably similar to Black southern, and sounds nothing like the quasi-Appalachian hillbilly spiel she was trying to pull off.
Then you have the genteel, "old South" accent which I find very pleasing to hear. It is spoken very slowly and is generally pronounced in a grammatically correct fashion. Certain letters are either not pronounced or are pronounced in an unusual fashion, such as the letter/sound "r". For example the word "butter" would be pronounced "buttah." Nichole Kidman did a great job of affecting that form of speech in Cold Mountain.
