I don't care; period. He's my guy; I want him to run, regardless of what you might say about him. You're free to support him. Best of luck.
As for me, I will look elsewhere.

Apparently, someone has got to carry their common banner, should McCain drop out. If you don't want to vote for him, then don't. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other.
I'm off to bed...work in the morning. Have a good night.

1995? More importantly, Fred steered way clear of the more recent abomination. Actually, the original McCain-Fiengold-Thompson legislation in 1995 was more radical than the water-down version Bush signed into law.
And far from distancing himself, Thompson helped McCain's campaign in 2000.

What does what transpired between McCain and Thompson 6, 10, 12 years ago when Fred Thompson was a senator have to do with today?

What does what transpired between McCain and Thompson 6, 10, 12 years ago when Fred Thompson was a senator have to do with today? Nothing, unless you want a nominee with the same disrespect for the First Amendment as John McCain.

Ah well, Fred's older and wiser now.

I had forgotten...McCain-Feingold-THOMPSON. Doh... People also forget that McCain-Feingold-Thompson campaign finance reform was more extreme even back then, in 1995. From the above article:
The McCain-Feingold-Thompson bill is fair, tough, creative and comprehensive. It provides for strict spending limits for Senate candidates, alternative resources through free television time, strict limits on special-interest political action committees (PACs), and an end to the soft money system.
These are similar to the extreme measures "the old" Mitt Romney called for in his campaign to out-liberal Ted Kennedy for the Senate.

I would like to see some evidence of this presumed renewed respect for the First Amendment.
That would require a monumental shift in his view of government and our rights.

You think Fred Thompson disrespects the 1st amendment because he has a friendship with McCain? I think he has a record and history that belies that. His ACU rating and votes:

I don't know what you have against him ... maybe you should say ... but his high 80's rating from the ACU and his ability to galvanize the Pubbie electorate is meaningful.

You think Fred Thompson disrespects the 1st amendment because he has a friendship with McCain? Read post #835
Fred Thompson joined forces with McCain and Feingold in their first attempt to skirt our First Amendment rights with "campaign finance reform."
At the time, it was known as McCain-Feingold-Thompson.
And the bill was even worse back then. Can you imagine anyone actually advocated spending limits on campaigns?? Well, Fred Thompson did.
