WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Secretary of the Army Francis Harvey resigned Friday in the wake of recent reports of substandard conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, a key facility treating troops wounded in Iraq.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Harvey's resignation at the Pentagon, just a day after Harvey removed the hospital's commander, Maj. Gen. George Weightman, from his post.

A statement from the Army said it had "lost trust and confidence in the commander's leadership."

Harvey had been the Army's top civilian official since November 2004. Before President Bush appointed him to the position, he spent much of his career working for defense contractors, according his Army biography.

Earlier Friday, Bush said he is "deeply troubled" by the reports from Walter Reed and will form a bipartisan panel to assess medical care for wounded U.S. service members.

Where in the hell were the senior NCOs? That 2 star had a CSM and he should have been fired first.

Kiley. Apparently Harvey named him to replace Weightman. Not kosher...

I was on the phone a couple of days ago with an old Army buddy who served with White in Vietnam and later in the Pentagon (80s). He said the same thing you just posted.

Frank, is that you?

Now that Harvey's gone, Kiley will probably get the boot first thing in the morning...

Look at it this way, Waxman has been chairman barely 2 months and already Walter Reed hospital has turned to crap.

I'd suggest Waxman commit seppuku as soon as possible.

No doubt, it's pretty much "quit now and get out of this somewhat dignified or die a thousand deaths being fired".

Yes. He's an excellent internist and leader. I hope he doesn't become another fall-guy.

Nicholson was on ABC the other night saying how well soldiers with serious brain injuries are being treated. I know firsthand that the is wrong.

Nicholson should have said "wait? show me that this is happening and if it is heads will roll". But instead he gave the "no big deal" routine.

I don't care who it is or what party they belong to they damn sure better get the problem fixed and fixed now! The parents of a young Marine who has had a serious brain injury should not have to babysit a 20 something kid 24/7 because they can't get in help in their home.

Our seriously wounded soldiers should be taken care of! No more new sports stadiums, no more luxuries if any kind paid for by my tax dollars until these kids are set. For life!

On and FYI, I've put my own time and $$$ in to this problem already as have many others. But it takes major $$$ to care for these kids. Major to me and to the family but pennies to the whole country.

If we can't take care of the families of our dead and our wounded and their families pull them all out!

Did the General do a "walk through" with the CSM after
command change and make a "bitch~list" so the CSM can
come back and "bitch" ??

How many "bitch~lists" have been made since 1966 ??
Was/is there a "bitches~fixed" list ??

Are "they" gunna "fix" the VA system that these GI's will have to use when they get out of WR ??!

~~~One Must Wonder~~~
Everybody who wants socialized medicine should look at the VA system . .
It's a disgrace and always has been.
Likewise -- and too few conservatives seem to catch this part of it -- if you really think this (or the next) war is not taking a huge toll, consider the wounded, maimed and disabled who seldom figure in the casualty totals we see in the media. VA benefits are nowhere near generous enough to compensate American servicemen for the loss of their arms, legs and, particularly, their mental abilities.
If the taxpayers paid full price, as these veterans deserve, do you think this country would be quite so willing to send more troops to war?
Amen!
The stories I heard from people, who use the system are heartbreaking.
I have an aunt, who works for them and she talked my father into getting a digital hearing aid(hearing loss due to airplane engines WWII) from them, after three years of non performance, he spent $8,000 on the civilian model and has no problems.
It is wonderful to hold a conservation with him again.
Hate to disappoint you, but the District of Columbia is actually a third world country. They would not have a freakin' clue and even if someone did, they will screw it up given the chance.
Rummy firing Sec Army White was because he saw White, a retired Army Brigadier General as too "pro-Army" and realistic on the need for transformation of the army without destroying it in the transition.
I think it was over the Crusader Piece of Crap. BG (Ret)White tried to go over and around Rummy--his staff went to congressmen to try and save it after Rummy killed it.
How do I know? I worked on Crusader with UDLP--total piece of crap and ill designed.
I have been in the Army for 22 years and received lasik surgery at Walter Reed. While the maintenance of the facilities is not the greatest, (what can you expect from the Washington DC labor pool) the care is first rate. On the same visit for my first consult for Lasik I also went to the orthopedic clinic for boot inserts. I felt like a sissy getting inserts for pain in my feet from 22 years of marching when there was one Soldier and one Sailor without a lower leg. The next thing I knew, another Soldier walked in and it turned out he was missing both legs.
Walter Reed has been a rat hole for years. This is nothing new. It was a rat hole when I was stationed in DC in 1970; it was a rat hole when I visited it in the 80's; and it's a rat hole now.
That it why the base closing commission voted to close the damn thing. It was ancient, obsolete, out-of-date, etc. It was cramped, had no area for expansion.
The Walter Reed story was an article that the WaPo could have run any time in the last 30 years and didn't.
They were just head hunting.
Someone fired a General who had absolutely nothing to do with allowing conditions there to become what they were.
Rummie would've told the media that they were slow. That the place had already been targeted for closure.
Because it's the armpit of hospitals.
What I really want to know is this: who were the dolts who were trying to keep the base closure committee from closing Walter Reed?
