ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MOSUL: Dozens of al Qaeda-led militants stormed an Iraqi jail in the northern city of Mosul today and freed up to 140 prisoners in one of the biggest prison breaks since the US-led invasion in 2003, police said.
As many as 300 militants led by Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the self-styled Islamic State in Iraq, attacked Mosul's northwestern Badoush prison just after sunset in the ethnically mixed city and overwhelmed police, who were forced to call the US military for backup, officials said.

Hisham al-Hamdani, a member of the Mosul provincial government, said Abu Omar al-Baghdadi took part in the attack himself. The Islamic State in Iraq is a body set up by al Qaeda's Iraq wing and other Sunni militant groups in October."

The Final Solution to Germany's Gas Supply Woes...

German energy giant E.on has confirmed it is in talks with Iran to buy natural gas -- although Germany is currently discussing further sanctions over Iran's nuclear program with its allies.

Germany has for years been talking about diversifying its natural gas supplies to reduce over-reliance on Russia. But the solution currently being considered by German energy utility E.on may end up being just as controversial -- the company wants to buy gas from Iran.

The announcement by E.on that it was seeking a potential deal with Iran to buy so-called "liquid natural gas" (LNG) came on Tuesday. The energy giant is currently seeking a long-term source of LNG for a new terminal it wants to build at Wilhelmshaven on Germany's coast. LNG, which is delivered by ship rather than by pipeline, gives a utility greater flexibility in choosing which producers to buy from.

Gang member can stay: judge

A violent Winnipeg gang member who is facing a deportation order to his native Somalia was recently given a reprieve by a federal court judge who said the Somalian's life would be in danger if he returned. Federal Judge Sean Harrington said Hussein Jilaow doesn't deserve to remain in Canada but concluded Jilaow would likely be killed if he were deported according to the travel plans outlined by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

"I have no doubt whatsoever that Mr. Jilaow is a public menace who does not deserve to remain here," Harrington wrote, adding he's been convicted 13 times since 1999 for violent offences.

"I doubt that many persons subject to removal... have clean hands. However that is no reason to send them to a place where those hands may be chopped off."

Jilaow, 26, was given a three-year prison sentence in October for making a series of threats against guards at the downtown remand centre. Jilaow, a member of the Mad Cowz street gang, was at the Remand Centre in July 2005 when he got into a fight with several other inmates.

Words to heed Ex.

Reminds me of a story my climbing buddy told me when he was down in NC in the path of a CAT 3 hurricane. He held out as long as he dared, but eventually checked into a 'shelter'.

Once you go into a shelter, you are not permitted to leave and will be arrested if you attempt to do so. The folks at FEMA are NOT our friends.

I am VERY fortunate that I am only a day's hike or a 20 minute ride (back country roads) to my 'safe zone'. I would only leave if my friends called needing help or the air became toxic (chemical spill or whatever).

Ex is right on the money IMHO. If at all possible, stay put and shelter in place.

U.S. Troops Nab Al Qaeda Killer, ‘Mouthpiece’ in Iraq Raids

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2007 – American troops killed one terrorist and detained 16 others, including an alleged al Qaeda-affiliated killer and a media representative, during a series of morning raids conducted throughout Iraq today.

Coalition forces in Mosul captured an al Qaeda-related suspect known as “The Butcher,” who is allegedly responsible for numerous kidnappings, beheadings and suicide operations in the Ramadi and Mosul areas. Coalition forces also detained five other suspects and killed one terrorist during the raid.

Coalition troops operating in Fallujah captured two suspected terrorists with alleged ties to foreign fighter operations.

Elsewhere, coalition forces captured a suspected al Qaeda “media emir” and seven other suspects during a raid northeast of Karmah, officials said. Officials believe the detainees are part of an al Qaeda courier network.

“Coalition forces will continue to target al Qaeda in Iraq and foreign terrorist facilitators regardless of where they may hide,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesperson.

In other Iraq news, U.S. ground troops teamed up with AH-64 Apache helicopters to destroy a platoon-sized element of enemy fighters during a March 7 engagement fought west of Baghdad International Airport.

During the lead-up to the battle, a patrol from Troop A, 1st Battalion, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, reported enemy tracer fire in an area known as Az-Zaidon. As they moved toward the firing, they found armed insurgents arrayed in an ambush position along both sides of a canal road. A truck was parked nearby.

After clearing the area of friendly forces, the patrol called in close-air support. The Apaches engaged the enemy fighters, killing 12 and destroying the truck, which had an anti-aircraft heavy machine gun mounted in its bed.

During another operation on the same day, U.S. soldiers foiled an attempt by insurgents to plant an improvised explosive device near a Taji market. Several insurgents were spotted and fired on by Camp Taji tower guards. The insurgents fled before they had time to fully emplace the bomb.

Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, quickly arrived at the site and secured the area. They found two 130 millimeter rounds, which were later disposed of by explosives experts. An investigation is under way to find the people who tried to plant the bomb, U.S. officials said.

Iraqis Helping Troops Find Weapons Caches, General Says

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2007 – Iraqis in the country’s north, fed up with ongoing violence, are leading U.S. and Iraqi forces to some of the largest weapons and bombs caches found in the region to date, the commander of Multinational Division North told Pentagon reporters today.

This comes as U.S. troops in that area are handing off most counterinsurgency missions to Iraqi forces, allowing U.S. troops to focus on killing or capturing those who finance, make and emplace the deadly improvised explosive devices, said Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commander of Multinational Division North and the 25th Infantry Division.

So far this year, his forces have nearly doubled the monthly averages for finding IED caches, Mixon told reporters in the Pentagon via a satellite link from Contingency Operating Base Speicher, outside of Tikrit. The forces also have doubled the monthly average for killing the insurgents who use them, he said.

“The enemy is ruthless in using IEDs,” Mixon said. “We are equally as aggressive and violent in our approach to defeat them.”

Mixon said a cache found last week in Diyala had enough material to make about 130 “explosively formed projectiles,” as well as military-grade rockets and mortars, the largest find of that type so far. While EFPs make up only one percent of IEDs used against coalition forces, they are among the most deadly.

The find was part of an Iraqi forces-led mission and was based on a tip by a local informant, Mixon said. No arrests were made, but officials are still working with the informant to identify insurgents involved.

Locals are more willing to lead coalition forces to weapons and bombs caches partly because of the increased presence of Iraqi forces, Mixon said.

“The population areas that we work in are more comfortable with the Iraqi security forces … so they are providing us more tips. Some of those tips come in through the tips lines. Some are as simple as a civilian walking in and providing information. So their comfort level is up,” he said.

Another large cache found recently in Mosul included homemade explosive materials, such as fertilizers and acids often used in car bombs.

Because of their recent focus on insurgents using IEDs, the threat has gone down in the area, Mixon said. Also, changes in enemy tactics are posted on an IED Web page that leaders access.

In addition, body armor and protective gear help keep soldiers alive if hit. In fact, 76 percent of soldiers injured by such explosives are able to return to duty, he said. His troops also are getting better at spotting planted bombs, the general said.

Still, despite recent successes, Mixon said, much more work is needed in the region, where more civilians die from IED attacks than do security forces.

“We have a long way to go to defeat this threat. Too many of our casualties are as a result of the IEDs. I am not satisfied and will not be satisfied until I dramatically reduce the numbers of casualties caused by IEDs,” he said.
