When I was in the service and I heard of people talking this way about the freedom of speech I always got the strong urge to punch them in the face for two reasons. First, the idea that any servicemember could somehow lose the protections of the Bill of Rights is appalling. Yes they have signed a contract to serve under the UCMJ, but that doesn't mean that they are some piece of meat (or 'item' or 'property' as I was often told) that the government could exploit without restrictions. Second, the first amendment doesn't give the right to free speech. It prevents Congress from restricting it. Along with the 10th amendment, the first amendment is a right that the people have not delegated to the government. The opposite (where the government gives you rights) is true in despotic states.
