It is still going on.

As an aside, America, on it's own, dealt with slavery faster than any of our colonial masters. Further, we constituted our nation knowing that slavery would split our fragile union. We solved that, at the highest cost we've ever sustained, with our Civil War. Finally, the CRA of the '60s finalized the inclusion of black America across the land - with higher a percentage Republican support than Democrat.

That would certainly be news to the hundreds if not thousands of slaves who escaped the USA via the underground railroad to come to Canada, which was a British colony at the time. England was YEARS ahead of the US in abolition of the slave trade.
