This wisp of a notion is simply this: Maybe a Democrat should win in 2008.
Personally, I don’t believe in this poltergeist, at least not yet. But every now and then, I must confess, I do shiver from its touch.
The idea goes something like this: If you believe that the war on terror is real — really real — then you think it is inevitable that more and bloodier conflicts with radical Islam are on the way, regardless of who is in the White House. If the clash of civilizations is afoot, then the issues separating Democrats and Republicans are as pressing as whether the captain of the Titanic is going to have fish or chicken for dinner. There’s a showdown coming. Period. Full stop. My task isn’t to convince you that this view is correct (though I basically believe it is), but merely that it is honestly and firmly held by many on the right and by a comparative handful on the left.

I don't know, but it's not Giuliani, McCain or Romney. None of these guys are full blooded conservatives who can rouse the base, but each is burdened with a full load of baggage that will eventually pull his campaign down. The only way any of these gentlemen can win in the general is if the Democrat vote splits and I don't see that happening. They're marching in lock step to stop the war and advance their liberal agenda.
And no more Clintons!!!
This reminds me of a football game, deep in the 4th quarter, the quarterback of the trailing team gets desperate and slings a stupid interception, ensuring victory for the other team.

As I read this, my dear old cat decided to have a great hair ball and rolled of the bed to hack herself to near death.
She survived but I'll have someting to clean-up in the AM.
Not to worry.
It is better than listening to the wonderful Democrat's and the whimps in the Senate.

We saw this before mid-terms - I think its mainly hyperbole to express how strongly unhappy many conservatives are.
I use hyperbole too - for example I'm a fiscal conservative so unhappy with the budget deficit I might say something like "I oppose further tax cuts that don't have matching spending cuts" when the truth is I feel more flexible than that.

That's the scary part.
So what conservative Republican candidate can rise to beat the Dem candidate? Some viable conservative needs to toss his hat in the ring soon. It's really too bad about Allen, but he can't stage a comeback. Hillary is raising money like crazy.
Newt was able to energize the country and unite Republicans in 1994, but I don't think it would work now.

I couldn't even watch the Senate debate today, a couple of times I turned it on for a minute or so, the Dems were speaking, I was lucky to be able to turn off the TV, instead of throwing something at it.
An anology someone used, that made the point pretty well, was something like this:
"You are unhappy with your babysitter, so you fire her and hire Michael Jackson".
the question needs to be asked of all Dems,"What would you do should we be attacked as we were on 911?"
Thanks for stating the above. I do not see where the republican party has anyone strong enough to overcome a democrat presidential victory in 2008. A strong effort to retake the House or Senate or both will be the best offense the republicans can take.

They will immediately start legal proceedings, making sure that the terrorists have adequate legal council at taxpayer expense.
Are there any current or recent conservative governors? They would have the best chance.

I don't think the who matters as much as the philosophy and ability. He has to be a rock solid no nonsense Republican conservative of unquestionable character with a proven track record and he must travel lightly, ie, with a minimum amount of baggage. A military background would be a huge plus. He may be a governor, a senator or a congressman. Doesn't matter. And doesn't really matter how well known he is NOW as long as he's fully qualified and marketable. Once we zero in on the candidate who can pull together the coalition and is capable enough to slay the beast, the money and support will roll in. And the moment he picks up steam in the primary campaign, he gains immediate nationwide and worldwide name recognition. The media and the grassroots will see to that.
