What I find more interesting is the killer's background. His family said he wasn't violent and was a nice person and they were totally surprised by his actions.

Then his juvenile record was released. Gee, what a surprise. He was a violent teen offender whose record was expunged in Oct, 2006 when he turned 18. At the age of 9 or 10, he held a knife to his landlord's throat. The landlord didn't report it. The killer also threatened a little girl with a knife at the age of 12, saying "I will kill you". At the age of 10, he was referred to Juvenile Court for throwing rocks at a little girl. How his family can claim that he was a nice kid is beyond me. Here are more details:

Trolley Square killer had violent juvenile history

Well, well, well.... I have heard over and over again on KSL, KNRS (local radio here in SLC) that there just isn't anything that points to a motive. Looks to me like the motive is simply calculated evil. He simply wanted to commit suicide and take as many as he could with him, in my opinion - especially after his history of violence.
Thanks for the information Utah Girl!
