I believe in the second amendment. However, like all of the freedoms granted in the amendments, they are not unlimited.

I grew up in NJ in the 90s. My father has worked in NYC for his entire childhood. From 1985-1995 he was held up at gunpoint and mugged. No this wasen't late at night and it wasen't in a bad area of the city. This was during the morning rush hour outside of his office which was at the World Trade Center. Then Giuliani became mayor and instituted tougher gun laws and got guns out of the hands of people who commit violent crimes and as we all know violent crime was cut by 2/3s. Yet, if you were a law abiding citizen with a clean record, you could get a gun.

I understand in the rural areas of the country gun laws seem nonsensical and I agree. Having tough gun laws in rural middle America is pointless.

That illustrates the local nature of the issue. Rudy understands that and that is his posistion. He knows places like NYC need tough laws whereas Kansas does not. Therefore, like a true conservative he believes that it is a state right.

Wow bad typo sorry its almost 3 AM

I meant to say my father worked in NYC for my entire childhood and still does to this day.

I also forgot to mention that he was mugged 5 times between 85 and 95.

The most dangerous places in America are where honest, lawabiding citizens have been disarmed. It ain't rocket science. It doesn't take a genius to realize that armed robbers don't obey gun laws anyway. I lived in Washington, DC, I know. It is illegal to have a gun, but somehow, I still heard nightly gunfire coming from Anacostia.

Giuliani's gun rules had nothing to do with it. Those muggers weren't licensed, nor could they buy a gun anywhere else. Do you realize that? Rudy took the guns away from the law abiding citizens. Sure, you can have a gun, if your the mayor's good buddy. Otherwise no. Did the muggers use semi-auto rifles? No they didn't. Are citizen's allowed effective self defence against muggers? No!

"I understand in the rural areas of the country gun laws seem nonsensical "

This is ridiculous. It doesn't matter where you live. Do you think your law abiding fellows are out to get ya? You have no idea how many people have guns and live in the city. They're never noticed. All those other States that have conceal carry laws aren't shoot 'em ups ville, like your claim would suggest. They are city areas, and if a law abiding gun owner shoots someone, it's a mugger, rapist, robber, home invader, ect.

"I believe in the second amendment."

No you don't. You think "shall not be infringed", means infringe at will.

Okay, should freedom religion also be a state right? If the Governor of Connecticut doesn't like Buddhism, why not make that faith illegal in Connecticut and go door to door confiscating all its holy books and shrines and stuff? Nothing wrong with that, according to your formulation: the Bill of Rights is simply a rough template for the localities to pick and choose from, it seems you're saying.

I hope I'm misreading you.

Were there other Giuliani initiatives that might've contributed to the drop in violent crime? Or was it 100% gun control? I'm sorry about your father's bad experience. Would your father have been mugged if the bad guys had thought he might've been armed?
