Interesting point about a possible precedent in the making.

I believe Alf Landon was a NYC Mayor that was nominated, but not elected to the Presidency. Not SURE, however.

Nope, it wasn't Landon. He was governor of Kansas and ran in 1936.

Who was it that ran in 1928?
