Funny, I didn't think "it" was hidden. Like any other historical information, it should be studied and analyzed in the context of the times.
Studying history is not worth much if you evaluate motives based on contemporary standards and reasoning. You will not learn why people did what they did by imprinting your thought processes upon their reasoning.
What may seem like an easy stance to us may well have required tremendous courage in another era.
Based on the way this particular exercise is been described, I don't see any effort to actually understand much of anything of history at that time.
PC sees history as well as pretty much everything else, through a very egocentric lens.
