Yeah, after that explanation, it does sound pretty tame. Sounds like just a silly gag, more meant to be funny than disgusting.
Still not sure how it would sell candy bars, but I'm not in the advertising biz...

The candy companies have inside marketing info that target the groups of people they sell most to. Which in this case happens to be the 10 to 25 year age groups.
An ad like this is very much accepted by that group, in fact, it stands out and gets their attention with a positive impact. I'm sure they saw it as hilarious and witty.
This is where this country is headed unfortunately.
