Many Republicans are in denial as to how friendly Ronald Reagan was to gays personally. He had bunches of gay friends in Hollywood, according to his son, Michael, a conservative radio talk show host, and he was the first president known to host an openly gay couple (Roy Cohn & partner) as guests, sleeping together, in the upstairs residence at the White House.

I remember reading in the mainstream press about a mini-scandal over the fact that some gay Republicans were so well connected with the Reagan White House that there were private, after-hours tours of the premises for their gay guests.

Before becoming President, Reagan campaigned against the California ballot initiative which would have banned gays from teaching in California public schools.
