You can characterize it as "being against giving away the store" or whatever other way you want, but tariffs and trade quotas are still protectionism.

Duncan Hunter advocates ending NAFTA and the 35-70% subsidy Chinese goods enjoy. I'm with him on both. Further, if it takes trade quotas to retain a steel industry capable of making components critical to national defense, that positive externality so warrants, especially when foreign competition benefits from subsidies.
