In contrast, I work around 11.5 months out of the year. My employer can't tolerate me being gone for more than a couple of days at a time.

SLACKER!!!!

I know the feeling... I once had a hell of a time getting time off from work for jury duty. Part of the problem was my job as a networking systems instructor, and in the case of one of the classes I taught, I was 1 of just 4 instructors in the country authorized to teach the class. My employer had to write a letter to the court, to reschedule my jury duty, since I had been scheduled to teach classes for three months from that date. So, three months later I showed up for 3 days and then was done...

But even now (with a different job as a network admin), even though I've got 2 weeks of vacation a year, they'd rather that I not take more than 3 days of time off at a time. To be honest with you, I'd be absolutely thrilled if I could get an entire weekend off of work! A few months ago, I went 6 weeks without a full day off.

Interesting. I'm a network/systems admin. I'm on call every other week, and my boss takes the phone and pager when I'm not on call, but when he runs into a problem he can't resolve, which is most all of them, he calls me. There's another guy there who can do some things with the system, but he isn't terribly experienced, and sometimes runs into problems. It's a very demanding line of work, but I wouldn't do anything else I love it. I'm glad to see you got a taste of the demand as an instructor before going to be an admin. It was a bit of a shock for me, but I got used to it after a few months. I would cry for additional staff, but the job security is nice. :P

I'll go you one better....last year my mom had a subarachnoid hemmhorage. She lived in Cincinnati but it happened in Indianapolis. At the time I handled payroll, billing and taxes for 2 companies (both owned by my boss) and had to fly back to MS from Indianapolis every monday, do the bills, do the invoicing and do the payroll and fly back to Indy on tuesday noght or wed morning. When mom did die (4 months later) I spent the entire morning of her funeral on the phone with a girl here, walking her through payroll.
