If it is from Walter Kronkite, it must be right (wrong? Left?)

Faith-based initiatives. Intelligent design. Gay marriage. Terri Schiavo.

Alarmed by what they see as religious groups' growing influence on government policy, a consortium has launched a public awareness campaign to defend the First Amendment's vow that ``Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.''

``That cherished freedom is under severe attack,'' the Rev. Welton Gaddy said before an audience of about 700 people in San Jose. Friday's Commonwealth Club of California meeting also included an appearance by journalist Walter Cronkite, who endorsed the new national campaign called First Amendment First.

Ping to a thread by wagglebee on Ronald Reagan, R.I.P.

Fellow Americans, our duty is before us tonight. Let us go forward, determined to serve selflessly a vision of man with God, government for people, and humanity at peace. For it is now our task to tend and preserve, through the darkest and coldest nights, that "sacred fire of liberty" that President Washington spoke of two centuries ago, a fire that tonight remains a beacon to all the oppressed of the world, shining forth from this kindly, pleasant, greening land we call America.

Wagglebee thread on the meager serving on our plates...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The three leading Republican candidates for president are disappointing pro-life advocates when it comes to the issue of abortion. None of them have been reliably pro-life throughout their careers and all three are seen as guilty of pandering to pro-life advocates recently in efforts to win their support.

Thread from markomalley. Thanks, narses...

Most Alabama lawmakers responding to an Associated Press survey say they would support a proposed constitutional amendment declaring that life begins at conception -- a measure some see as a first step toward banning abortions in Alabama.

During last year's election campaigns, Democrats and Republicans listed passage of the amendment as a priority, but with the start of the 2007 regular session a little more than a week away, no lawmaker has announced plans to introduce the measure.

A few short weeks ago, that would have been an idle boast. But these days, I guess Anna Nicole isn't as fussy about her lovers.

>> Fonda is known as much for her activism as she is for her acting - both of which she traces back to the films of her father.

"One after another where he played a character that fought for those less fortunate - where he fought for freedom and equality," said Fonda.

It's all make-believe. It's all "Let's pretend." It's all Mickey Rooney saying to Judy Garland, "I know, let's put on a show!!" Jane Fonda even admits here that her views are merely theatrics. She actually boasts that her vision is derived from her father's role-playing -- as if Henry Fonda, playing the role of Lt. Colonel Daniel Kiley, had anything to do with winning the Battle of the Bulge. She needn't add that her whole pampered life has been played for the camera.

Small wonder spoiled brats like Jane look down their noses at everyone else. They never grow up.

You and I may not think she's as cuddly as she used to be, but the judge seems to have improper thoughts.

A deeply religious man, he endured a shunning by his church and threats from people who claimed to be acting in God's name. The case tore him up, friends said, because of what was at stake. In public, though, Judge Greer never let his emotions or his personal beliefs get the better of him. He ruled on the law.

As I've said before, Caiaphas and his bloodthirsty allies probably had the same attitude.

It is the logic of SOCIALIST medicine to kill off the elderly, the weak, the high-cost cases. Patients with above-average costs are (correctly) seen to be hogging scarce medical resources.

Unless they are gay AIDS patients...

ATLANTA - An American diagnosed with the AIDS virus can expect to live for about 24 years on average, and the cost of health care over those two-plus decades is more than $600,000, new research indicates.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15655257/

The amount spent researching a cure for disease...

AIDS: $3000/death
Cancer/Heart Disease/Etc: Roughly $100-$200/death

People you know are sick and dying because the medical establishment is inappropriately allocating resources to researching a cure for a completely preventable disease that afflicts a small, vocal, special interest group.

Yeah, sure, the case tore up old George Greer. He was so torn up he could hardly wait to be a speaker at that right-to-die seminar along with Michael Schiavo, Jay Wolfson, Dr. Humane Death Cranford and Art Caplan, among others. And it just tore him up all the more to collect the awards and acclaim given by, and to, right-to-die activists.

You're not getting any younger, George. Better make your peace before a Higher Judge asks you why you killed Terri Schiavo.

Army Spc. Ethan Biggers
Rest in peace.

Family's story one of duty, love: Soldier dies a year after being shot in Iraq

Biggers' family stopped trying to keep him alive on Feb. 13. His feedings were halted and all that was left were the goodbyes.

On Saturday, about 1:35 a.m., Ethan died, with Matt holding his hand and Liza at his side.

Spc. Biggers lasted almost eleven days before succumbing to starvation/dehydration. Thanks for your service Soldier. Thanks for fighting for our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I'm sorry we didn't return the favor.

The anniversary of that fateful day approaches in a month. That day would be so significant as to provide cover for inconvenient revelations.

.............................

During the robbery Nichols took boxes of nitromethane, and afterwards he stashed them under his own house in Herington, Kansas. It was in order to implicate Moore in the OKC bombing that Nichols leaked information about this explosives cache in March 2005. Thanks to a tip from the late Stephen Dresch and his colleague Angela Clemente, this story was first reported in full in WND.

According to Rohrbacher, the FBI did not follow up on Nichols' leak "until members of Congress were alerted." As reported here, the FBI delayed four weeks – until late in the day on which Terry Schiavo died – before retrieving the explosives.

The following day, a Friday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced its absurdly lenient punishment of Sandy Berger, a classic "media dump." With Pope John Paul II dying a day later, the media had all the excuse it needed to ignore both stories.

It's a bird, it's a plane! Nope, it is something else.

Helen Valois writes for RenewAmerica...

What I've always been told about this strategy is that it is the savvy thing to do, the "Clark Kent" approach to defending truth, justice, and the American way. To come right out and tell everyone where you stand isn't the way for a conservative candidate to get into office (so the argument goes), and you need to be in office to make a difference. And so, election after election, we've been prevailed upon to vote for some mild-mannered moderate, counting on him — like the adoring crowds looking up expectantly from the city sidewalk — to come through when the chips are down.

The only problem is that our Republican representatives and appointees, in office at last, promptly forgot about the "dashing for the phone booth" part of the deal. The Bush brothers (to mention but the most egregious of countless recent examples that spring readily to mind) didn't exactly rip their shirts open, revealing a bold conservative "C" on their chests, when Terri Schiavo's life was on the line. After decades of doing the Republicans' dirty work, we dreaded right-wing grassroots conspirators are finally having to face the pathetic facts: if it looks like a moderate and votes like a moderate, it's a moderate. Our heroes have turned out to need those horn-rimmed glasses after all.

Meet Marco Rubio, Florida...

But Rubio, not only the first Cuban-American but the first minority to become Florida House speaker in the chamber's 162 years, has not always sounded like a populist.

He served for two years as the majority leader and mouthpiece for former Speaker Johnnie Byrd, remembered as one of the chamber's most partisan and ruthless leaders.

In recent years, he supported state intervention to keep Terri Schiavo alive, backed attempts to dilute the voter-approved reduction of class sizes and favored former Gov. Jeb Bush's voucher programs.

LONDON (UPI) — Pressure is growing in Britain to shorten the 24-week limit on abortion, with medical experts and church leaders saying it is outdated.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that critics of the current 24-week limit cite medical advances that would allow the survival of up to 2,000 fetuses that are aborted each year.

Recently published photos of Amilla Taylor -- the world's most premature surviving infant, born at just 10 ounces -- have fueled the call for a review of abortion laws. Advocates for a review are calling for the time limit to be shortened to 20 weeks.
