Still Waiting
Dakota Voice ^ | 1/29/2007 | Carrie K. Hutchens

Posted on 02/02/2007 3:49:53 AM PST by 8mmMauser

I don't know about anyone else, but I am still waiting for Michael Schiavo to make a correction on his blog about what "actually" took place in Colorado when he went there (to the debate) to supposedly ask Congresswoman Musgrave one question and she and her staff supposedly tried to have him removed. He called it, "My unreal night in Colorado - with radio link" (Thu Oct 26, 2006 at 08:05:14 PM PST). I'll say (from what I read) that it was his "unreal night".

As I said before in "Standing up and Admitting a Mistake: Not Schiavo's Style?",  if four uniformed officers were around my seat, I would have some idea of what was going on. I certainly wouldn't be sitting in "duh mode" to only be told later of what took place right there around me, as Michael suggests he was. If Michael's account is realistic -- his response and reaction is not. Nor is his response appropriate now that he has "learned" what he was "allegedly told" is not what took place. One would think if he can't get the words out that he was mistaken, he could at least have removed the inaccurate entry from his blog.

He has done neither.

I'm also still waiting to read about, "Also, maybe tomorrow I'll post about my election-eve rally with Bill Clinton in Florida." (A real election impact by Michael Schiavo, Thu Nov 09, 2006 at 10:40:34 AM PST).  Indeed, I would love to read that story by Michael, since I read it was not possible. Not if he was implying it was the Bill Clinton that is the former President of the United States. Will be interesting to see what he says about that if he ever does.

If Michael couldn't get it straight what happened at the Musgrave debate or even if he spent election-eve with former President Bill Clinton -- do you suppose he might have gotten Terri Schiavo's wishes mixed-up as well? (He does claim to have a bad memory from what I read.) Makes one wonder. At least makes me wonder. Whatever...

I'm still waiting for the corrections if not the explanations!

TEXAS FUTILE CARE: END IT - DON’T MEND IT!!!!!!

A Texas state Senate committee on Thursday plans to hear testimony on
proposed changes to the 1999 law.

The game being played is to “mend” doctor-murder. It can’t be mended because
It is fundamentally wrong. We can’t let them ‘mend’ their way into keeping this
Law. They need to hear: destroy all such laws totally. Otherwise they are just
Going to throw more committees at it, more bureaucracy, and it will be worse.

Thanks, A.L.

LauraAndLinda.com: The Anti Schiavo Story (Webpage with links to streaming audio of radio interview)

* Linda Evans Shepherd: tells of the Children's Hospital doctor who suggested withholding a shot of antibiotics from her 20-year-old handicapped daughter to let her die, and his guilt three days later when he saw severely disabled Laura laughing and singing. Also, Linda tells of confronting Michael Schiavo, and about the horrendous crash that left her own toddler more disabled than Terri Schiavo, and of Laura's wonderful life!
LauraAndLinda.com is part of the title, not the actual webpage of the link. But you really should visit LauraAndLinda.com. It's a wonderful site, rich with information and inspiration.

Defining life and death

~snip~

Each of these people, if born today, may find their very existence threatened, if not today, then at some tomorrow some believe isn't far away.

A case in point is being heard even now in Texas, which has inspired a noted author and speaker, and mother of a disabled child, Linda Evans Shepherd, to write in part, "If Emilio were an endangered species like an owl, a fish or even a worm, the public outcry would be heard all the way to Washington. But he's a Hispanic baby boy.

"This is prejudice of the worst kind. If we don't cry out, how many other children, elderly, and disabled people will die at the hands of hospital ethics committees, committees who have taken both God and the value of human life out of their death-decision calculations? Their formulas will become more blood-thirsty, to the point that any American with a sudden disability, stroke or aging issue will be at risk for execution."

This article is a reaffirmation of what we heard yesterday.

.......................................

CBNNews.com -- A Texas judge granted Tuesday a mother's request to keep her son alive, ruling that Austin's Children's Hospital should not remove 17-month-old Emilio from life-support as planned until evidence from both sides can be heard. In an exclusive interview with the Gonzales' lead attorney, Jerri Ward told CBN News that the family was granted a temporary restraining order keeping the hospital staff from disconnecting Emilio's life-support system until at least the next court date on April 19.

Ward asserted that if the injunction had not been given, his medical treatment would have likely been terminated by hospital staff some time Wednesday.Commenting on the national response to Emilio's case, Ward disclosed that "Many messages about possibilities for his future treatment" have been received by her office.

However, the Gonzales family is still working on finding a long-term care facility and doctor to provide treatment for him.

The boy's mother, 23-year-old Catarina Gonzales, has been fighting a Texas law that could allow the hospital where he's receiving care to pull the plug on his life support.

We may presume from the stumbling attempts of candidates to buy into a love-Terri fest that Terri's Legacy actually has currency, in spite of the loud detractor shouts. Hot Air sums up the Rudy effort in one phrase...

In other Rudy news, libertarian and social con critics are each trying to get traction from his Schiavo comments, without much luck. America’s tired, boys.

Wagglebee thread on Rudy attempt to buy in...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- As more information has come in about Rudy Giuliani's comments on the Terri Schiavo dispute, his position seems consistent with previous remarks he's made. However, one pro-life advocate says he's not impressed and not confident that Giuliani is on the same page as the pro-life movement.

As LifeNews.com reported last week, the former New York City mayor made a campaign swing through Florida and told people there that he supported the state government's efforts to save Terri Schiavo's life.

Wagglebee thread on push by Big Abortion...

If all goes as predicted, Mexico will soon legalize abortion and become a full-fledged participant in the most prolific holocaust the world has ever known. To bring this about, the Mexican abortion lobby has regurgitated the same collection of lies and distortions that their American counterparts have used over the last 40 years or so. They clearly operate on the assumption that Mexican politicians are as stupid, corrupt, immoral and cowardly as American politicians, and the results show that the assumption is not unjustified.

From Ms. Shepherd's site:

>> "...When he finished his tirade, with congressional candidate Paccione by his side, I raised my hand and said, "I'm the mother of a handicapped child. What about Terri's mother and father - weren't they her family too?"

>> "Schiavo turned his full attention on me and with angry passion told me Terri's parents had lost their rights to her when she married him. (In other words, she was his property to be disposed of.)"

This very point came up in another thread. The visitor, a lawyer (male), argued much like Michael, neglecting to point out that the spouse (guardian) has responsibilities. If I didn't know better (and I don't), I'd be forced to believe that these guys really do think their wives are chattel with no rights. They should convert to Muhammadanism so they can enjoy Sharia law and beat their wives with a stick. We are right back to Dred Scott and a class of people regarded by law as subhuman and devoid of rights -- as professor and law teacher Gary Amos argued in his important essay on the Schiavo case.

Worth noting also that Michael directed his anger at the Schindlers. He testified once that he was killing Terri because he hated Bob and Mary Schindler and that they had "put him through hell." George Felos had to step in and rescue him from his ranting on the witness chair.

Call me a chauvinist, but I'm proud of my American politicians and I'm utterly confident they are stupider, more corrupt, more immoral, more cowardly and better paid for betraying their country than any other pols in the world.

>> Campaigning in Alabama on Tuesday, the former New York City mayor portrayed himself as a fiscal conservative

"Fiscal conservatives" are liberals who are trying to pass themselves off as conservatives to voters. The term simply means that the candidate is willing to recklessly increase taxes to pay for reckless increases in government spending. This is supposed to balance the budget. It never does. It simply takes more money out of your pocket, adds on another layer of bureaucracy, slows the economy, sets the stage for a new depression, and helps turn American into a third-world country.

The Texas Futile Care law is under a well deserved scrutiny and more spotlight than the practicioners would wish.

AUSTIN – Lawmakers debated monumental questions of life and death Thursday, with committees considering changes to rules on end-of-life care and how much, if at all, the state should be involved in embryonic stem-cell research.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee heard heartfelt testimony on a bill that would void a key provision of Texas' landmark end-of-life law – one that allows medical professionals to end a terminal patient's life-sustaining treatment if that person can't be transferred to another facility within 10 days.

Amber Dolle writes in RenewAmerica...

Thanks to Texas' draconian futile care law, the decision as to how long Emilio should continue to receive life-sustaining treatment now lies in the hands of hospital officials. Forget parental rights. According to the state law (signed into place in 1999 by Gov. George W. Bush), hospitals have the right to end life-sustaining treatment in so-called medically futile cases after a 10-day notice to the family.

While the officials at Children's Hospital in Austin believe they know when little Emilio should die, his mother and family are quick to disagree. Catarina Gonzales does not deny that her son is chronically ill, but she is not ready to give up. She wants to fight for her son's life — just as any good mother would — and she deserves that right.

Another play based on Terri I just might miss, unless I wanted to learn the true meaning of "angst" and I don't. It does appear to invoke meanings of "clueless," though.

Where does life end and death begin? This is a question pondered by philosophers, theologians and laymen throughout the world. It is a controversial and difficult issue, as experienced recently in cases such as that of coma victim Terry Schiavo, which became a media circus.

The Chocolate Factory, a performing arts company in Long Island City, grapples with this issue in a new play written by Ken Urban based on a concept by Urban and Brian Rogers, artistic director of the Chocolate Factory.

He died ironically, on the anniversary of Terri's death...

Prominent criminal defense lawyer Harland Braun, who met Gargaro in the District Attorney’s Office and later shared office space with him, described him as “a very quiet guy who felt very deeply about things.”

He noted that the two worked together on two of the county’s highest-profile criminal cases of the 1980s, the prosecution of director John Landis and others as a result of the death of actor Vic Morrow on the set of the movie “The Twilight Zone,” and the prosecution of two doctors for withdrawing nutrition and hydration, as well as life support, from a patient in a persistent vegetative state.

“It was like the Terry Schiavo case, but 20 years earlier,” Braun explained.

Bobby Schindler...

..............................

The Terri Schiavo case brought many to a moral crossroads in 2005, but few knew the real story behind her disability. Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, set the record straight Wednesday night at a Marquette Students for Life-sponsored speaker event.

Schindler spoke on Schiavo's behalf because, he said, "what happened to my sister is still happening today - nationally and internationally."

He described the Schindler family, the events surrounding Schiavo's accident, her condition and the nationally televised trial preceding her death.

In 1990, Schindler said, Schiavo collapsed of unknown causes in the apartment she shared with husband Michael Schiavo. Terri Schiavo went into a coma and was put on a respirator.

"Terri started to improve and was off the respirator within a few weeks," Schindler said. "The only thing sustaining her was a feeding tube placed directly into her stomach."

Doctors examined Terri and decided she was a good candidate for rehabilitation, Schindler said, and with therapy she began to improve and form small words again.

In 1992, Michael Schiavo filed a lawsuit against the physicians providing Terri Schiavo's care, and was awarded $1.2 million and allowed to care for her at home. He promised to continue her rehabilitation, citing the couple's wedding vows, Schindler said.

Three months later, Terri's father confronted Michael about his not continuing rehabilitation, and ties between Terri's family and Michael Schiavo were soon severed, Schindler said.

In 1993, Michael Schiavo began dating and was soon engaged to another woman.

"In 1998, Michael petitioned to remove Terri's feeding tube," Schindler said, adding that Michael argued she had told him in her early 20s that she would wish to die in these circumstances.

In 2000, Michael Schiavo, who was to inherit Terri's $1 million trust fund, brought the case before a judge, who ruled the feeding tube removed.

For the next five years, the Schindler family fought for Terri's life in court; they were ultimately unsuccessful. Terri Schiavo died March 31, 2005 of dehydration.

"My sister was not dying," Schindler said. "She had no terminal illness."

Schindler expressed dismay at modern society's treatment of disabled people.

"What's so alarming is what I'm seeing reported in the media - that we are a nation that sees the compassionate thing as killing people with disabilities," Schindler said. "We can find ways to kill them or we can do what I believe is right, and care for them."

Schindler, whose family is Catholic, agrees with the Catholic teaching that every human life is sacred.

"Does every human life have equal and moral worth simply because it is human?" Schindler asked.

He also discussed the media's misrepresentation of Terri's case, in which reporters referred to her "right to die" and mistakenly labeled her "braindead."

"We did what I think any family would do in the same circumstances," Schindler said. "We were simply protecting the life of a loved one."

Maura McGlynn, a junior in the College of Arts & Sciences and secretary of Marquette Students for Life, said Marquette students should examine moral issues closely.

"You hear a lot of things, but it's important to be informed," McGlynn said.

Catharine Relation, a freshman in the College of Health Sciences, attended the presentation and said she found it very revealing.

"(Schindler) brought to light so much of the case that I had no clue about," Relation said. "I think I am much more of an advocate of disabled rights now and am aware of the injustice of courts today."

Haliegh Poutre...

The governor made his comments in a series of meetings with reporters to discuss his first 100 days in office. While speaking to The Associated Press, he said he won't endorse keeping the state's embattled child welfare boss, saying his new Health and Human Services secretary will decide whether to fire or retain him, and he expects a decision "soon."

Lewis H. Spence, commissioner of the Department of Social Services since 2001, has come under fire for the agency's handling of two recent high-profile cases of child abuse, one being that of Haleigh Poutre.

Despite numerous reports of child abuse and neglect, the department left the 11-year-old girl in her Westfield home, and didn't take custody of her until she was hospitalized with a brain injury.

Receiving a report that the girl was in a persistent vegetative state, the department received permission to remove her from life support. However, that step was not taken and she is now in a rehabilitative hospital in Boston.
