This is a letter by Henry Hyde and signed by several other Republican congressmen to Reagan criticizing the design and asking Interior Secretary James Watt not to approve it.

No doubt there was controversy from the very beginning, because the war and it's aftermath was controversial. There was even controversy amongst those who proposed a memorial - - Jan Scruggs and others. There was a tad bit of racism when Maya Linh's (sp?) design for the memorial was selected.

I just think the Memorial transcends politics.
